Disturbing trend of people masking up again

It seems corporations are recommending or demanding their employees wear masks once again. Why? Are we really going to do this again over a common cold?

I travel non stop for work and its obvious what cities/states are the sheep...
Yesterday, actually had a woman up until 1 min before boarding standing around, chatting in line with numerous people around without a mask, then pull one out and put one on before walking on plane

Went into a Trader Joe’s yesterday. More masks in there than anywhere else I’ve been in DFW for a long time.
I forgot TJs is a magnet for liberal women.

I see it more and more again in North Fulton (ATL). Pretty specific groups of people, of course.

I’ve noticed more people at work starting to mask up again. And I’ve seen a few “Covid” leave requests come across my desk as well.
I suspect the former is because of people being morons and reacting to every little sniffle as “oh my god! It’s Covid!!!”
The latter is people gaming the system at increased rates because it’s crunch time at work and we’re all having to work a little harder. The only way you’re getting off of work the next five weeks is if you claim to have Covid.
The combination of the two might lead the west coast based company I work for to require masks again.

Flu and RSV are hitting my area hard right now. There actually is a better case for masking to prevent flu spread (still stupid) in certain situations.
But my gut tells me it's mostly virtue signal BS.

A while back i was arguing with some idiot on the O-T about this. He stated he would wear masks and get as many injections so he wouldn't get the common cold.

I'm seeing a slow up-tic in maskers in the area lately. I'm certain it's not a pure COVID knee jerk, but it's odd.
Black folks haven't stopped wearing them in Louisville at all it seems - alone in cars, outdoors walking (literally), at outdoor sporting events, in malls, walking into homes for thanksgiving...Tuskegee effect.
