What’s the consensus here?

Are we still avoiding front load because of mildew?
Or is the technology long since past that yet?

We had bad luck with the front loaders. We went back to an old school top loader washer with an agitator. It was never broken to begin with so why fix it?

Front load washers are for city people that don’t really get dirty, hunt, or fish.

No bullshite.

Top load vs front load washers

I have a front-load washer. I don't like it. I won't be sad when it breaks.

I'll buy a top-load washer next time around. It will take some configuration to redo my countertop above my washer and dryer, but it will be worth it.

I hate front load. Never had a mildew problem, top load just cleans better. Things can’t really soak in a front load.

Glad to see the top load love.

I’m leaning agitator vs impeller.
Does anyone have experience with the removable impellers?

We have 3 washers in the house and the best one is the old, junky Kenmore in the basement. All 3 are top loaders, but one you can't adjust water level and it just doesn't seem to clean well enough. Another "newer" one, 3 years old, we went cheap, because you could adjust water level. That one cleans ok, but not as good as that old one that can get the job done.

A local service tech told me that if everyone bought top load Speed Queen he'd go out of business.

ETA: but they ain't cheap.

I've had front load washers for over 20 years and never had any issues. Never noticed any cleaning problems or mildew issues (if you leave the washer door open after use to let it dry out, mildew shouldn't be an issue). Never understood the hate front load washers get here.

I found out the hard way that the HE washers are to conserve water and not to clean better. Clothing never smelled fresh. I had non stop mildew and other problems. I replaced with a Speed Queen set and all the problems disappeared. The SQ even gets the odors out of the sweaty clothes. I only regret I didn’t replace them sooner.

No thanks to the extra maintenance and lower capacity of front loaders. Glad to be done with our only experiment ever with one.

I have one of each. Stacked front loader made it 12 years and had to be replaced, New one has auto soap dispenser and cleans much better than old one, i like it much better. 20? Year old staked xxl toploader is twist knobs, no frills or LED display and it is heavy duty with beach towels and really dirty stuff.

Both do the job, but front load stackable is very convenient in an upstairs hall closet, and that is important.

Always have had top load, when we moved they had a nearly new front load. My wife loses her mind about the “mold” which I never really smell or notice. She bought a top load yesterday on some Black Friday deal

Whatever you do, don’t get the top loader that just has a bump kind of thing and not a real agitator. That was awful. I have a Speed Queen now and it’s pretty great. Great warranty, too.

Lazy women don’t maintain it properly, and it stinks to high heaven.

Three very simple things and they are fantastic.

1- after washing, crack open the soap dispenser and front door. Front door has a pre-latch that leaves it open like 1/4 inch. This allows them to breath

2- if you do whites only load, add a small bit of bleach with it

3- like once a month, run an empty load with a couple cups of white vinegar, then an empty load all water only. Like cleaning a coffee maker
