MUNCIE, Ind. — City police said a 4-year-old Muncie boy fatally shot himself Monday with a loaded handgun left on a child's dollhouse.

According to an affidavit, Jackson told investigators he owned a 9mm handgun that he routinely left "sitting on a dollhouse" in the bedroom he shared with Smith and her two children, ages 4 and 2.

Smith said Jackson – who had reportedly resided with Smith and her children for about a month – had left his gun sitting on the dollhouse "at least 10 times," resulting in several related arguments.

Jackson, however, maintained Smith had "no objections" to where he kept the gun.

Dang. Critics will say it is because of permitless carry.

Once again irresponsible firearm owners doing dumb things is not an accident.

This should be negligent homicide / involuntary manslaughter charges against the firearm owner.

It’s sad. A good reminder to lock up your guns or keep them in a safe place

The first thing a child under 4 does when they find a gun is look down the barrel. Often by hold the trigger guard/grip. Cook Children's has a good video on a study of it if anyone is interested.

Good. As it should be. If you can't be responsible enough to secure your firearm in a home around children then you deserve what comes to you if one gets ahold of it and hurts/kills themselves.

4 people living together in a bedroom in Muncie, IN sounds horrible.

Ugh. Terrible.

Generally speaking, when you have 4 year-old, a single parent should be very discerning before allowing an adult man to come into their house to live with them.

Well she’s 22 with a 4YO and a 2YO and a 19YO boyfriend. Both of them are incredibly stupid and need to be institutionalized for their own good. The poor 4YO is the tragedy here.

Throw the book at him. This wasn't a kid who broke into a locked area, dude left a fully loaded firearm routinely out where kids play.

what a terrible story. as if keeping it in reach of the child isnt bad enough, it was (most likely) left in a condition to fire as well. what a series of terrible decisions. just horrible.
