I don't really care. If Jimbo was Woodward's #1 choice, then sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

Kelly was the target, the only target. Woodward had secured it well in advance to not have to do a full blown search. The guy knows how to seal up leaks. Smokescreen info never came from him. I’d hate to play the guy in poker. He’s got a deadpan poker face and doesn’t flinch

No. Pretty well known Riley used LSU to get what he wanted out of USC since his agent had connections to LSU with other clients he was never LSU's main target. Same with Fisher his agent likely floated that bullshite out there to rob TAMU. Either that or Woody is a genius tactician. You really think if Woody wanted Jimbo they wouldn't have thrown the bank at him? He targets and he gets who he wants money is never an issue.

Jimbo had double-digit win totals in 6 of his 8 seasons at FSS. Won his division in the ACC 4 of his first 5 seasons and the ACC 3 of those 4 times. In his last season, his worst season at FSU, he was 7-6. In that season he lost his returning starting QB to injury in the first game vs Alabama. The same QB went 10-3 the previous season.
Jimbo is an insufferable douche, but he looked like a very good coach at FSU. Mediocre at aTm until this year. Both can be true.
And I do not think Woodward pursued Jimbo though I am sure he asked questions, as anyone on a coaching search would do, regarding potential coaches. You always gauge interest and Jimbo looked to be steamrolling recruiting.
But I think as soon as Kelly showed serious interest and it was clear he would take the job for the right price, it was a simple matter of agreeing to terms and timing. Some of the public statements SW has made sound to me like that was very early and all parties kept it close to the vest.

That might be true, but Kelly’s agent could have been contacted when Orgeron was fired, for all we know. Kelly isn’t going to come out and say he was talking to LSU during ND’s regular season.

Woodward called around about a lot of coaches in the first phase of the search. I’m sure he talked to Jimbo and a couple dozen other coaches and agents. That’s his job.
He was never his #1 and never went hard after him by any stretch of the imagination.

Absolutely. He was a year away from getting canned at FSU. Woodward baled them out. No way he screws up twice on the same bum
