I keep hearing from Finebaum/others saying as it’s an understood truth that Woodward wanted Fisher as his number 1 choice in the coaching search last year. Now I know Finebaum is a good journalist and wouldn’t say things without thinking he had knowledge on the subject, but is there any substance to that other than the ESPN report that we wanted to offer him $13 million a year? It’s just not logical honestly that we would have offered Fisher that amount and BK gets $9.5 million a year. Obviously it’s pointless to discuss, but the backhanded narrative that we got “lucky” by hiring Kelly as a backup option is annoying. Kelly was objectively a better coach.

IMO, that was all Jimmy Sexton.

I think both Fisher and Riley were smokescreens. All signs pointed to Kelly being his white whale from the beginning.

That’s a good question. I remember when that was reported I felt my stomach turn. Even with Jimbo’s somewhat success the last two years, I think everyone could see this year coming. He was a good coach, but the game has passed him by, I can’t see Woodward seriously considering him. Bayou Billy would’ve been a better choice for the value.

Had to be and Woodward seems like the type of guy to oblige in allowing that fodder to help out friends/business contacts. It’s a smart play to foster good long term relationships with agents and coaches.

Jimbo went from the top of the ACC to the bottom at Florida St. How anyone would think that he was an elite coach is ridiculous. Jimbo inherited a load roster from Bobby Bowden and has never built a program and has proven that he can't maintain one before A&M hired him.
He has proven to be a looser at A&M, makes no-sense for Woodward to try to jire Dumbo at LSU

In Jimbo's defense, he was as much responsible for that roster as Bobby was.

Riley was definitely smokescreen. Riley and Kelly have the same agent. I have no doubt Woodward reached out to him about both guys and he was told Riley was a no but Kelly is a maybe.

Looking back now when the rumors about Riley to LSU started it was all a smokescreen because all parties involved (USC and Riley, LSU and Kelly) could work in secret while the public is looking in a different direction. I think it was all orchestrated by their agent.

I don't think it's a stretch that Jimbo was Woodwards number 1 guy. Usually where there is smoke there is fire. I am just glad A&M kept him. I do think a lot of our fans wanted him though...and weren't happy with CBK getting the job.

The ONLY big name that almost never came up was Kelly. This indicates he was the target all along.

1. Rumors start about Jimbo
2. Rumors circulate that we’d hired Riley for some obscene number.
3. Riley says “I won’t be the next coach at LSU”and gets announced at USC for a crazy $$$
3. Kelly get me announced by LSU for less than Riley, but they have the same agent? (Once a coach re-sets the market agents want more for the next hire)

So logically Kelly was hired “in principal” well before it was announced and almost certainly before Riley at USC.

IMO Kelly was hired before ND really had a chance at the playoff. It’s one of the reasons he agreed to the timing.

I think this is a story people tell themselves to feel better, i don't buy it.

I know the father of an all American from bama last yr, he told me it was JF from the jump. Claimed it was all done and sealed. Made me wonder, how would he know and how if he did LSU was doing a terrible job of keeping it quiet.

I never believed it for a second, but it sure seems like they used JF and TAM as a smoke screen. Perhaps BK was the backup plan, but that's hard to believe knowing what we know now.

"I will not be the next coach at LSU" ... (because I know who that coach is, and it ain't me. I'm headed to USC.)

Yeah as the dust settled it became very clear Riley was never seriously a candidate.

Woodward talking to his agent

“Is Lincoln Riley available?” “No he is not”

“Is Brian Kelly available?” “He will listen”

Then everyone benefits from the rumors about Riley to LSU through November.

Well the thing was Fischer would not have been a big splash hire at the time. I personally don’t think he was on the list, I think it was just lazy reporting ( Woodward hired him before, he must be his guy) supported by rumors started by agents to get their clients more money.

He was the assistant coach from 2007-09. He became head coach 2010. He won a NC 2014. Try again.

Jimbo was NOT offered to come back to LSU under Woodward. This information is direct from the primary source in BTR.

It never happened. Sexton leveraged LSU’s opening to get Jimbo more money from A&M. Liucci, principal of TexAgs, ran with it and a few national guys ran with it.

That’s it. There was no offer.

Tell me something I don't know. Still living on the reputation that Bobby Bowden built. His last year FS was 6&6 Dumbo has been a bottom feeder ever since. 10-2 one year at A&M he had the nickname 8&4 Jimbo and now he is 4-8 Jimbo

You can try again

frick face, I'm not arguing Jimbo didn't destory FSU but he did help build it before destroying it. Both can happen. BB last few years were bad by the way.

No intelligent reply just resort to personal insults. Yeah that'll bolster your BS
