I'd consider Guinness and Old Rasputin to be the bench marks for dark beers. They are both amazing on draft. Nitro is even better.

I love Guinness. Very drinkable dark beer, but still feel lite.

Some of the dark stouts are great, but I feel like crap after drinking one.

La Cumbre's BBA La Negra Russian Imperial stout is excellent.

A wildly unappreciated beer (and red ales in general), but I wouldn't consider it a dark beer.

Surprised no one has mentioned Great Raft Reasonably Corrupt yet. Had some over the weekend, and it's a really nice option when you don't want something as heavy as most stouts, but with lots of flavor.

This is a nice list. Bell's makes some great stouts too. I love their Expedition Stout. Fairhope Brewing Co. will be on the shelves in LA soon. Their Judge Roy Bean stout is really good.
