DMV trying to screw me $525

Hope someone can shed some light on this for me. Long story short, I was donated a vehicle as part of an exit package from my former employer. I paid the taxes, registered it and put insurance on it October 23, 2020. I went to get my inspection sticker renewed on September 30 last month. I was informed same day that my registration needed to be renewed as well. Went to a title company same day and was told that my registration was blocked due to a lapse in insurance on said vehicle. The title company gave me documentation stating the insurance was cancelled on the vehicle on July 20, 2020. I have emailed the DMV all the documents they requested and they are saying I owe $525 to get the vehicle back right. WTH? There has never been a day that car has not had insurance on it since the day I took ownership. How the hell can I be responsible for what happened to the car before I owned it? Also, if there was an issue with a lapse of insurance when I first took ownership on October 23, 2020, why wasn’t that an issue then?

Oh yeah. I’m in Louisiana if that matters

Happened to me around 7-8 years ago. Flew From BTR to San Antonio for a job and as I was checking out for my rental vehicle I was told my license had a hold on it. I flew back to BTR and was told at the dmv I had not been paying insurance on a vehicle I sold in alabama two years prior.
I paid over $800 in fees to get my license back. I was told I could contest but it never went anywhere. This happened to thousands others in Louisiana that year. Total money grab.

Sounds like something wasn’t done right with cancellation of the old registration under the former employer.
You should be able to get it cleared up if you have documentation showing you’ve had insurance the entire time since the vehicle waa donated and registered to you. It will probably involve headache and a good portion of your day waiting in line at the DMV though. I’m not sure if those privately owned DMV express places could clear something like this up, but worth a shot before you spend 6 hours in line at the DMV

Just happened to me. Moving back from Houston after 10 years.
Got proof of insurance from my agent in Houston and they lifted the hold. Be prepared to wait on hold a long time when you call.
So basically you have to prove DMV has screwed up information.
State Farm said it happens all the time.

It’s a PITA. Last time it happened to me it was after I traded in my car, but had 4 month wait for delivery of the new one. DMV flagged the lapse of insurance. I think the dealership resolved it, but you can never really be certain until you physically receive the registration sticker.

They got me for something similar about 8 years ago. I moved from LA to TN and registered my car in TN. LA flagged me for not having insurance even though the car wasn't registered in LA and I wasn't a LA resident anymore. Cost around $500 to make it go away. They said it was my responsibility to notify LA I had changed registration or something like that. I don't remember the exact reason, but it was complete and utter bullshite, and they had me by the balls.

same thing just happened to me but it's only going to cost me a couple hundred. They said my license was flagged for no insurance for a 3 day period over July 4th Weekend. I haven't paid it yet. Hoping it'll just go away by the time i need to renew my license and if it's still there, i'll just pay it. Definitely sounds a little scammy to me though.

I spoke to my insurance agent today. He says he can send the proof of uninterrupted insurance documents over to the DMV today. This will clear it up he says. But get this, they(DMV) only process these on Wednesdays??. Also the document I got from the title company, that was pulled from the DMV has a different policy number on it????

I got fined for myself and my wife. We switched insurance companies and they claimed we had a lapse. Apparently they consider having coverage on the 5th by one company and a different company on the 6th a lapse in coverage, you need days to OVERLAP. It was over a grand and I ended up having to pay penalties after fighting it.

I had this same issue, I had a vehicle I sold to CarMax and cut the insurance the same day. The state’s system had both those details but didn’t register correctly that I didn’t need insurance on the car going forward bc it wasn’t mine. Wanted $600 or so from me to get the hold off my license. Ended up being I took it to the express DMV on Siegen in BR, they have a couple pros who can fix that stuff in the system (even though it should be obvious). They cleared it up for me and I didn’t pay anything

Louisiana DMV assumes you are guilty until proven innocent. Its a big fricking state government scam as you can see from the numerous replies. Yet it obviously does no good because car insurance and uninsured driver rates are sky high. I think most of the money goes to the state police who are also a bunch of crooks.

Happened to me when I was in the military. I kept my Louisiana drivers license etc. They fricked me so hard to became a resident of Texas and never looked back.
They didnt give a shite and forced me to pay.

If you have USAA, they know the scam. They’ll give you a letter that states you were covered a couple months subsequent to the insurance cancellation date.

Paid $525 here too.
Chalk it up to COLIL.
Cost of living in Louisiana.

This is just one of the many reasons I’m glad I left that state and never looked back. There are lots of things to love about Louisiana but the government bureaucracies wear you down.

This happened to me, but it was with a car I sold. I went to the DMV with the bill of sale, and I got my insurance agent to pull the records that showed I had insurance on the vehicle for a day past the date on the bill of sale.
Don't bother calling. Make an appointment and go to the DMV with your documentation. It got cleared up pretty quickly once I showed my documents in person. I could never get any resolution on phone or through email.
