The Mrs. was telling me a story tonight about a young professional who began having panic attacks and crippling anxiety and is no longer able to function.

I explained that I treat my crippling anxiety with a daily dose of suck-it-the-frick-up.

Mental illness is real. I get that. But “anxiety” seems to have become some insurmountable obstacle to every day life for a lot of people.

How do you know what’s real and what’s an excuse?

Anxiety is real but at the same time you have to understand what your triggers are and not do those things then also medicate to become the best version of you you can if you're not doing all that you're not actually trying

She should go to the gym to escape from it. I have a pretty stressful job and that’s what works for me. Started hitting the gym years ago and that became my escape

You obviously don't have crippling anxiety then.

This attitude is why we have a problem with mental illness in this country.

My father’s anxiety got so bad before he died that he couldn’t leave the house. He spent his time awake worrying every single second of the day. He couldn’t just “turn it off” and meds didn’t really help him much at that point. Everything was a catastrophe to him. Something little like running out of milk would set him off and he would freak out.

I had to basically surprise him the day of doctor’s appointments that I took him to. If I reminded him the day before he would spend all that time worrying about having to go to the appointment and it would make it more difficult for me to get him to get in the vehicle to take him.

So yes….anxiety can be “that bad”. I’m pretty sure that’s what actually killed my father. He literally worried himself to death.

I think a lot of this is true all though medication and therapy go a long way with figuring it out and making yourself work through it.

Crippling depression is an entirely different thing.

Imagine everything is going great in life, you're sitting on the couch relaxing watching tv and in an instant it feels like you can't breath and you're having a heart attack. It's real and terrifying for some people.

I always cringe when I read shite like this here. It is pretty obvious the people who don't have a clue.

ETA: And we did this exact thread no too long ago.

At any give time up to 30% of Americans are experiencing mental issues. Anxiety and depression are two of the most common conditions, and also two of the most treatable.

The brain is a delicate organ and there are thousands of things that can affect it negatively. You never know what battles are going on in another person’s head.

People had it in the past. Look at Howard Hughes. They called it “the vapors” or “nervous breakdown.” If you were rich, you were eccentric, and if you were poor you were a hermit or a drunk or had shell shock or some other term. I do agree that more people today have mild anxiety than in the past. I blame our lifestyle.

Everybody has anxiety at some level, at some time. There are mental exercises that decrease the level of anxiety, like:

1. Ask yourself about the source of the anxiety. Many times it’s actually nothing, and your head just decided it was time to worry.
2. Ask yourself what the worst case outcome of the anxiety is. Most times you’ll realize the worst case is a nothingburger.
3. Prayer and/or meditation.

I suffer from severe anxiety daily. It’s been this way for a few years now. A good portion of my anxiety comes from my Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, but there are other issues that can cause anxiety in a heartbeat.

I take several medications for anxiety and depression, and I truly feel it takes the edge off for me. The anxiety is still there, but it numbs it somewhat, to where I don’t feel overwhelmed. I may have moments of intense anxiety throughout the day at random times, but the medicine helps me to stay in control and not let it dictate my day. Therapy has also been a great tool in providing strategies to deal with anxiety and obsessive thoughts.
