With the price of dog food so out of control (lnomm's thread on the OT) i'm wondering if anyone on this board consistently makes their own 'wet' dog food cheaper?

Recipes?

Use an instant pot. Very easy to do with tons of recipes online. Portion it out and just put it in the freezer. It'll get chicken bones so soft, they'll be able to eat the whole thing.

Yes, but best quality is our goal. Commercial dog food is, well, dog shite. It's full of fillers and binders that is non-digestible and literally ends up getting crapped out. Cooking is also good for shelf stability/convenience but not best for a dog's health.

This is what we feed our Lab's, twice a day:
- 1 raw, bone-in chicken thigh (do NOT feed them cooked bones)
- Stella & Chewy's raw patty (it's fortified with various vitamins)
- raw 'glop' of various ground up veggies that would normally be discarded (like carrot tops or other parts people don't eat...not rotting stuff)

Google BARF diet if you're interested in reading more.

I do but I’m not sure it’s cheaper

I’m too lazy to clean chicken so I use boneless skinless breasts (about 25.00)
Boil them down
Take out & shred
Boil frozen green beans (about 8-10 of the 0.88 great value bags)
6 pounds of baked sweet potatoes mashed
18 eggs dumped into boiling green beans once they are done
About 4 cups cooked rice

I was adding browned ground turkey but haven’t last few times

This lasts about 3 weeks, she’s a Boxer so she gets about 4 cups a day
Her nails grow super fast & she’s a healthy weight
Will be 11 in December
It’s helped a decent amount with allergy issues

That's a hundred dollars of chicken breast alone before anything else.

What do you do for calcium? Just leave the shells on the eggs?

My dog would tear up that food you describe. Not so much the raw diet thing.

Last week I fed our two dogs some homemade stuff for three days, but since I knew it was temporary, I didn’t research nutrients or calories. I rough chopped and lightly cooked some carrots, added rice and scrambled eggs two of the days, and on the third day I did the carrots and rice, but added browned ground beef instead of eggs. No seasoning on anything. They certainly did not complain. I’d have to get more nutrition information if I decided to do it regularly.

I don’t
She’s been on this food for 5+ years, vet said she’s healthy & what I’m doing is good

Hmm. Well that's good to know. Every time I've looked into it, every online recipe seems to super fixate on the importance of either serving them bones or calcium supplements/egg shells, so I just assumed it was a big deal. Good to know it's not a huge thing. Plus, some of the ingredients you mentioned do have vitamins/minerals in them anyway.

I know someone that does the raw diet & adds supplements
Her dogs love it
I’m just not sure I could give my dog sardines or raw livers, Boxers are already known for being gassy

I don't have a dog but we feed our cat raw (purchased not homemade) and he absolutely loves it. Health improved significantly and much less poops without all the fillers. But it is not low cost.

We used to shoot wild hogs and grind them out and pack in 1 pound bags. Would brown 1 bag per week and mix with rice and mixed veggies.

We would top their dry food with this. But it got old after about 3 years so now we just buy gravy canned food and top their dry food with that.

Yes. Make it in bulk and freeze for the month. I have a small dog so it’s not too bad.

Ground beef
Frozen vegetables

Cook rice weekly and store in a different container.

Combine the two in a bowl and top with a scoop of Greek yogurt.

Our dog had really bad skin allergies and this pretty much cleared it up without having to get her shots every other month.

Do you warm it before you add yogurt or does she eat it cold?
May see if she likes yogurt but she’s the pickiest dog ever, turns her nose up at 90% of treats & people food

We warm up the food for 30-40 seconds before topping it with the yogurt.

I’ve given it to her cold a handful of times just to see if she would care. She doesn’t eats it right up

A scoop of yogurt solved all issues our dog had with gas and horrible smelling farts

Just a big ole scoop cold right on top of his food. He thought it was the biggest treat ever

Damn, people downvoting you for this.

You say 8-10 frozen greenbeans, is that 8-10 green beans only?

My dog had some stomach issues so we started cooking him chicken and rice and will mix it with his dog food. He will now not eat regular dog food by itself.

So you cook all of this, mix it together and freeze it? Do you freeze it into daily "packs" where you just take those out everyday or do you just keep this in the fridge? Assuming you freeze it as I can't imagine leaving chicken in the fridge for a few weeks is good.

I’ve been doing this since mine was a baby, and she’s 12. I don’t know if she’d eat just plain dry food. This is why I couldn’t do the raw thing. Zero chance this dog would eat raw meat or especially raw vegetables. She doesn’t even eat French fries without ketchup or pizza crust without toppings/sauce.

I’m the crazy person who microwaves it 30 seconds to warm it for her and mashes it into a paste before mixing well.
