Toyota Tacoma guys, your expert opinion is requested

Looking at a 2020 SR5 double cab with a 2.7L I4 engine. I very rarely tow anything, don’t need off road capabilities, just need a truck for occasionally hauling things. Tell me about reliability, ride, other pros and cons of this vehicle.
Most here talk like these trucks are bulletproof, but I’m seeing only slightly above average reviews online.

Cant speak to the newer models or Tacomas in general I suppose. But my 2006 Tundra has 230k miles on it and still runs the same as always. Its been awesome.

They hold their value really well.

I personally would not buy one. That is a lot of weight that motor is pulling & ‘straining’ it to accelerate will not do anything but shorten its life. V6 (4.0) is the way to go

Won’t have all the super cool gadgetry that other trucks will have- hell, Toyota finally put Apple Car Play in the Lexus GX for the 22MY ones.
But, with the most basic of routine maintenance, it will last forever. And, when you go to sell it, it will
have depreciated less than the other brands.
In fact, you may get what you paid for it because some Toyota fan boy has to have the color or trim you’re selling.

I bought a new 2019 TRD Off Road with the 6cyl
I hated it.
1. Not even close to the bang for your buck of a full sized truck…any brand.
2. Shitty technology
3. Transmission was always searching for a gear. I drove in manual mode most of the time.
4. Poor mpg compared to other trucks.
5. Anemic engine
6. Awkward driving position. Since the truck has good ground clearance and low roof height, they have to make a more horizontal seating position.
7. Didn’t like the composite bed
8. Stiff ride
BUT!!!
I paid $36K for the truck brand new, drove it 2.5 years, and got $33k on trade in for another truck.
My advice:
Get yourself a base model F150.
It will last a long time, it will be more powerful, will probably get better mpg, will have more load capacity, and you’ll have a better “comfort” experience.

Idk about the newer ones, but the old ones needed a stick shift with the 4 cylinders. The automatics were 3 or 4 speeds which meant no power and shite fuel economy.

I have a 2019 TRD Off Road. The ride is a little rough because of the package and probably won’t be the same for the SR5. Everything else is fine with the truck.
Do not get the 4 cylinder, you will regret it because the acceleration is horrible.

Last one I had was a 2017, it was my 5th Tacoma. Yea, it was def bulletproof. They last forever and rarely any mechanical issues. Only one I ever had was that my power steering pump went out. Toyota replaced it, it was under warranty. Never had another issue, on any of the 5 i owned.

Idk about the I4s but i have a V6 2018 SR5 and it's been perfect. Same as you, I didn't need it to go off road or tow. Like others have said, the tech is lacking but it makes up for it in reliability and resale.

Get the 6 cylinder. Traded mine in after 10 years. Still ran strong.

That thing rides like a champ. I’ll only ever get a Tacoma

Get the V6.
My old man retired and traded his 2500 diesel that he had forever in for a new Tacoma earlier this year. He loves that little truck and it does everything he needs out of a truck in his 60s.

I don’t have a Tacoma but I like to brag that my 2002 tundra has over 300000 miles. AC works great. Absolutely no problems except I had to change the radiator about three years ago.

I'd try to get the V6 simply because of down the line value. SR5 trim is enough for anyone really.

They are great trucks. My co-worker has one and I ride it in it almost daily.
I wish the interior was bigger. A lot bigger. I have to duck to get in it and I'm barely six-foot.
