Leaving Monday to go on a trip with my dad and some of his buddies. We are playing Erin Hills, Sand Valley, and the Kohler courses. I have played Whistling Straits and River at Blackwolf Run, has anybody played the others up there? I am super stoked for Erin Hills. Also looking forward to the Spotted Cows that will be consumed.

Played Erin hills about six years ago one year before the open. If the fescue is grown it is hard. Not an easy walk but a great course.

Played sand valley about a month ago, absolutely awesome track. You’re going to love it.

Just played Erin hills, lawsonia, and the bull at Pinehurst farms.

Really enjoyed all 3, and the bull may have been my favorite course of the 3. Lawsonia has been shooting up rankings list, and is a fun course.

All of them are wonderful; I still contend Blackwolf River is the most difficult course in the state (more difficult than Whistling Straits and Erin Hills) from the proper tees.

If you get a chance, get out to Lawsonia and play the Links course there. It's a Golden Age relic that is just recently getting it's due as a truly great American classic. One of the best (and toughest) courses in Wisconsin.

River is one of the hardest courses anywhere.
Lawsonia Links I hear is awesome.

As if I wasn’t jealous enough of your golf… you get to drink this glorious beverage.

We missed Sand Valley when we went, but I’m hopeful to get up there next time. I really enjoyed Erin Hills, but I think it also could be because of how well I played on the back 9 (and eagled 2, which was sweet)

Enjoyed both Blackwolf and Whistling courses, but the Straits is by far my favorite out of those. Also, the Baths is the best par 3 experience I’ve ever had. Just an absolute delight.

Only negative in Kohler was I’ve never seen more mosquitos in my life.

Anyone make any trips this year and report back? Making a trip when weather turns warm.

Is bathes worth squeezing in? I very much enjoy the cradle at Pinehurst.

On our trip we hit SV, Mammoth, the sandbox par three course, baths par three, Straits and Irish, and BWR River.

Great trip but I will say that the drive to SV was long after flying in, and then driving to Kohler was also a bit of time off our trip. Glad we did it to see both places but I would not go to both of them on same trip again.

Most people in group thought the Straits course was the best course they have ever played and we have all been to Bandon.

My rank of courses would be:
WS Straits
BWR River
Sand Valley
Irish
Mammoth

Sandbox better than Baths

Overall, Kohler a better place to stay as SV remote. Would probably hit Erin Hills and Kohler again if I went back.

Essentially what I am doing. EH then Kohler. Can squeeze bathes in before straits one day but trying to figure out if worth it. Not from a money stand point - more of effort and shite.

Playing: Erin hills, straits, bwr river

Did Kohler in 2016.
Whistling Straits was the pinnacle of my (limited) golfing experiences. BWR was excellent as well(the giant flag was a bonus).
When we played straits, I couldn’t stop grinning like an idiot. It was THAT great.
I definitely want to go back.

We did all three locations. The biggest consensus from our group was the Sand Valley would be skipped on the next trip. Not because the golf wasn’t good, but as others pointed out, it took up so much time traveling.

Erin Hills is a must if you are going up there. It is within an hour of Milwaukee. It is now also my favorite course I have ever played.

If I had to rank the courses they would be:

EH
Straits
River
Mammoth
SV
Irish
Meadows

As also noted, the Baths is the most enjoyable par 3 course I’ve played which includes the sandbox and Bandon Preserve.

This trip is a must for any group trip!

I am fortunate to have been on two trips with my dad the past two summers. Both trips were unforgettable not only for the golf, but to spend those weeks with him! I am sure your daughters feel the same way!

Hopefully you’re staying on-site at Erin Hills. It’s a great smaller setup and they bend over backwards to take care of you. It’s a stark contrast to Kohler.

I’m planing to get out to Sand Valley but I held off until Lido was done. Hope to do it in the next year or two.

ETA - shite. Should have noticed the date and read the whole thread. Sounds like a great trip.
