Staying in Antwerp the last week. First time here. Belgium is a hidden little gem. Brussels, Bruges, and Antwerp are all great. Tremendous architecture and history. People are friendly. Also great food, wine, and beer that is cheap compared to Rome or Paris. Spending two days in Amsterdam now but I was impressed with Belgium and would definitely come back.

Going to Bruges this winter. Can't wait. I will be swimming in mussels and beer.

Agreed....really fell in love with Belgium during 2020 (that is where I was when Trump made the call to start shutting down the borders)...
We did Bruges...loved the city and Huisbrouwerij De Halve Maan was terrific also...cannot even imagine a tour like that in the US climbing up and down ladders..the lawsuits
Antwerp, Ghent, Brussels, etc were all great...I am not really into art but really loved the tour of Rubens house.
Definitely want to go back as we were cut off before Waterloo and a some WW2 sites

Antwerp is a really nice little downtown. Did the MuseumNacht and it was like something in a much bigger city. Place is really safe too. No concerns wondering around at night.

I may be the biggest Belgium fan here, absolutely loved My time there and I've wanted to go back for awhile. I found plenty to do in A twerp, Ghent, Bruge, Leige, Dinant, and especially Brussels. Visited many cities throughout the country since I had rented a car and met some interesting people. Certainly not a 1-2 day country to see everything as I've seen claimed before.

Thinking of buying an apartment here. My brother-in-law is a developer here and will sell me at cost. Thinking I could use as a European base for exploring and rent 6 months a year.

I've looked into housing before and would love to purchase something to use for the summers and spring and then rent out during the winter. Never got as far as contacting a realtor about it though but I searched some listings.

I love Belgium. Ghent was probably my favorite town. If WW2 history interest you, I’d suggest Bastogne barracks and checking out the fox holes just outside the town where easy company was dug in. Also, there is a fantastic and pristine section on the Atlantic Wall on the coast. I can’t remember the name of the town though.

BIL said taxes are only on the land here and not the structure. So a $350k apartment would only be $800 year in taxes. Not bad.

Made a trip to Belgium in 2018 to see where my ancestors came from and absolutely loved it. Flew into Brussels, rented a car and drove to a B&B and spent a few days. As mentioned in other replies, nice people, great food, fantastic architecture and history. FYI, "french fries" are a Belgium food that soldiers in WWI eat in France and named them french fries.

It's in Oostende - great beach town. Here is the site for the Atlantic wall, we also really enjoyed it: LINK
Lived in Antwerp for 5 years and loved our time there. When I retire, I'm also considering to buy a place to live there for 6 months out of the year, it would be in either Gent or Antwerp.
For WWI, there are some great places to visit in and around Ypres. There is a nature preserve with walking trails on acres of land around the historic battlefronts between the Germans and British. It was amazing to see how well preserved they kept the land with the craters from all the mines that went off (e.g. Hill 60 and Caterpillar Crater).

I just arrived in Brussels today actually…planning to do Bruges tomorrow, and Dinant on Monday. Any hidden gems/great places to eat in Brussels? Any preference on Ghent vs Antwerp for another day trip?

I remember having a pretty solid meal at Fin de Siecle.

Hit Leonidas for chocolate. They have a store in BRU, but I bought 4 kilos to put into my carry on to bribe the girl that cuts my hair, the wife, etc.
I hit a *ton* of WWI/WWII stuff while I spent months in BRU, and driving into Bastogne in November/December is a surreal experience (the fog is a thing!) Also, if you can stretch it, some of the WWI American cemeteries in eastern France are splendid. There is also a giant advert for a building supply company with a three story tall dude with a beard and his full package on display next to the motorway on the way to Ypres from BRU.
