In this era of football, especially college, they’ll never have 3 LBs on the field

Ojulari would be considered a lb in a 3 man front.

You can have a nose that's shaded. Roy is good enough to get penetration that will require a double team. There's only so many guys you can double before you run out of oline. The other guys should get the 1 on 1 and that is very good for us.

Casual fans don't get a lot of the nuance of line play, on either side of the ball, but they get especially turned around if you try to explain these kinds of things, IMHO.

Eventually the will be very multable with their looks.
It will take time for everyone to be on the same page.
The great news is that they are very deep with great
players.Threre will be alot of options.

In a 3 DL look whats the depth chart look like?

DE: Maason Smith, Makhi Wingo, Bryce Langston

NG: Jaqueline Roy, Jacobian Guillory

DE: Ali Gaye, Quincy Wiggins

OLB: BJ Ojulari, Sai'vion Jones, Desmond Little

Gaye seems more suited to a stand up DE in a 4 man front than a DE in a 3 man front.

What?

What don't you understand? Its the same as John Emery being a better RB when we run 5 wide empty sets as opposed to 11 personnel...

Savion Jones is running behind Gaye according to his interviews.

When Ojulari comes off the field I’d suspect they’d go to a more traditional 4 man front, which plays into the strength of the team.

Excellent examples.

Personally I don't care how they get there, but they should be bringing 5 man rushes at least half the time when we get into the SEC schedule. We have the personnel to disguise this as well as fall back into a 3 or 4 man rush to keep the offense guessing.

The lone exception being when we play that air raid coach who can't seem to figure out the one defense that kills his offense.

He’s saying that a DE in a 3-man front is traditionally a bigger DE that can eat up blocks, i.e. Rashard Lawrence. Since Gaye is a long and lean DE with speed, he’s better suited to stand up and explode off the line/rush the passer.

Modern 3-4s will use one of the DEs as a traditional edge. Think Joey Bosa in San Diego. Very few teams worth a shite are running a 2-gap 3-4 anymore as a base defense. That's dino ball. Most teams are moving to the Fangio/Staley gap and a half 3-man line style.

Right now, the biggest concerns on the defense are at LB and the secondary. Pressure from the front 4 (or so) can help cover weaknesses on the back end. Just re-watch the Alabama game from last year. LSU was very thin at DB in that game. Going into it is looked like Alabama would shred LSU. Instead, LSU attacked Young all game long. As a result, they held Alabama to its lowest (regular season) point total in 4 years, forced 3 fumbles, had 3 sacks, and held Alabama to a (net) 6 yards rushing. Bryan Robinson had his worst game of the season, by far. And LSU did it all with essentially a collection of backups at DB.

If NOTHING else, this defense should be able to get after the QB as well as anyone in the nation.

To play the 3-4 you need excellent line backers.. I hate to be negative and ya can downvote but right now this team is built for a 4-3. Just saying

The college level is almost purely about Hector and Joe's not X's and O's when it comes to base defense. Hell, I'd be shocked if LSU played more than 40% of its snaps in base defense.
