Did school always start this early?

Niece and Nephew went back today. Seems kind of early. I remember like the middle-end of August as the return and September really being the month of "Back to School."
Or maybe it's just been 30 years and I'm remembering wrong

Could have sworn in started August 20 something back in my day. I'm assuming it's earlier now for the hurricane days but who knows.

No. They start early because they get what seems like upward of 15 one week breaks during the school year now.

My brothers birthday is around the 25th - I always thought when I was a kid that it started around then

Back in the day we started the Tuesday after Labor Day, but then it was the Stone Age we didn’t have AC in several of the classes…

When I was in school we didn't start until the last week of August but now it's the first week of the month. Part of it I believe is they get more days off during the school year than we did back then

My kids don’t start for almost another 2 weeks.

I'm 38 years old. I couldn't tell you what week of the year I started grade school in, much less the time of the morning, lol.

The barely working teachers wanted all kinds of time off through the year from such a grueling job.
So to still get kids a F rated education they moved around some schedules inline with the demands of bad employees.

Seems like we had almost a whole 3 months off in the summer

That’s way too early.

School starts earlier and earlier because of the flexible days due to hurricanes/storms and the increasing holidays.
Schools use to only give Wednesday, Thursday, Friday off for Thanksgiving now it is a whole week. You get 2 days for fall break, you get parent/teacher off, Mardi Gras is a week off now, etc....

We used to start mid August - around the 20th or so - and get out May 31st or so.
My kids start this Friday and will be out of school before Memorial Day.
They also get additional time off that we never got. They get a fall break, two days off for MLK, a week off for Mardi Gras PLUS 4 days off for Spring Break / Easter, etc.

We always started the week before Labor Day and ended before Memorial Day. We also got way less days off throughout the year. I think at most we got 7-10 days off for Christmas and we had way less snow days. Unless it was a major storm, you best believe you had to load up the school bus so the 1/2 blind 80 year old could drive you to school.
ETA: Outside of Christmas, we only got 1-2 days off for holidays.

We always started the day after Labor Day because there was no AC in any of the classrooms.

Back in the late 1980s, we started the school year on the last Monday of August and were done roughly around May 31st.
