A few weeks ago I suffered a serious spinal injury at home, gravity is not my friend. I had opinions from 3 top neurosurgeons, they all came up with the same prognosis, the damage is in the cervical vertebra, while paralysis in not likely, the damage will take months to heal, with or without surgery.

I was discharged to go home, I will get PT and OT which may or may not help, but what do I have to lose, I'll take it. I have my shoulders and upper back in a stiff cervical collar to heal, but I must be as still as possible and I must sleep facing up, very difficult.

My PCP has worked with PT and the neurosurgeon to give me the correct medications, however one of my fears is to come out of this with an addiction, luckily my PCP is conservative as I am, but this leaves me with the big problem, pain. For instance, it is now about 7:30 am and I have 2 hours to go before I allow myself another dose and I'm about a 7 on the pain scale and climbing.

My wife thinks I should just take the allowable doses and deal with the addictions later, but addictions don't run in my family, they gallop through it. Medical THC helps a little, but instead of euphoria, it depresses the hell out of me and it increases the chance of a fall.

Right now I can go to the bathroom by myself, my wife helps with a shower, but I can't ride in a vehicle, go out to eat or cook, I'm under virtual house arrest for at least 3 more months. I'm not much of a TV watcher, so I read on my Kindle until I get bored. My wife has been an absolute angel, she is normally a gym rat, but she doesn't want to leave me, even with relatives, to go work out. I've had a lot of visitors, please no more, and calls from friends.

My outlook is positive, but the pain is debilitating, meditation helps and as a Catholic we were taught to dedicate our pain to God, he may be getting sick of me.

I'm writing this because even with the narcotics, I'm hurting and blowing off a little. I may not be able to drive again, that bothers me a lot. The good side is that I was not paralyzed or killed and that it happened to me not a grandchild.

Weed?

ETA - I was being serious in terms of pain management.

Also:

Cold showers / ice baths
Turmeric (with black pepper) - anti-inflammatory
Ceylon cinnamon - anti-inflammatory
(can be taken daily. I do so with raw honey).

Hate to hear that. Hope everything goes well and you have a speedy recovery. I have been lucky enough to have never really need painkillers. I have only taken about 3 lorcets in my life when I had kidney stones, so I can’t offer any experiences to you about pain meds.

I herniated my L4/L5 disk about 30 years ago, been fighting it ever since.

I've had surgery once and probably 7 shots but it's still there, and flares up often.

I feel your pain

Man all I can say good luck to you and stay positive. Try not dependent on the drugs. You can easily end up a 75 year old morphine addict. Again good luck

Try quercetin as a pain alternative. Also nattokinase. Maybe just trying a few lesser/nonprescription supplements that can alleviate pain will help.

If the pain affects one side, your L/R knee will feel it in time and you have a double whammy.

I drive a stick....not cool. Use recumbent bike...and ice 3xs daily. get those cool packs. I have 3 knee braces to help.

Make sure it's really not a hip issue. I was misdiagnosed. Cost me alot.

Stretch and use heat pad when sitting at desk.....walk alot at office

I can’t add anything except I just said a prayer for you my friend.

Also, I am book marking this thread because - while not debilitating - I am dealing with an issue in the C2-C3 area that has not responded to PT and it looks like I really won’t be able to work out anymore due to the awful post workout pain.

I understand (just a little)how you feel about not doing things practically everyone rants for granted.

Stay strong for those grandkids.

This is where Fentanyl patches flourished. Put one on you and no pain all day. They went away years ago and now fentanyl is such a dirty drug but the patches were great for pain recovery.

I don't like to be in pain. I would take your wife's advice.

Thanks for the concern from everyone. As for the cause of the fall, I am on meds for blood pressure, I got up too quickly, I felt a little weak, I held on to the countertop, the next thing I knew I was on the floor in terrible pain. My wife was right next to me, but she could not stop me from falling. We got ice packs on the area immediately to stop the swelling and called EMS. Doc said this is not an uncommon side effect of HBP meds.

My spirits are high, but the pain is also, I just fear the addiction that many people get from opioids. I fill in the holes with NSAIDS, but they have issues also. I can't get cold pack or heating pads because the collar covers the area from which the pain comes.

The good news is that my weight is going down because I just don't have much of an appetite. The last 12 months have been hell, a tree caused major damage from Ida, the claim is over $150k and climbing.

Never. When I’m feeling down and don’t feel like leaving my house, I’ll listen to my parish’s mass on Facebook or the Daily Tv mass on YouTube. I also listen to the rosary on the Hallow app. Praying for you and your pain.

I get toredol injections for the arthritis in my hips and knees, but at best the benefit only lasts a few days and the side effects can be dangerous.

I never could figure out the pain scale when they ask. How am I supposed to know what a 5 is without some sort of key.

Seriously though, I hope you find relief soon. I have nerve pain from my neck down my left arm but luckily it only gets bad when I drive long distances.

My advice is take the medicine now and stay ahead of the pain. Deal with getting off the medicine in a few weeks won’t be a problem for someone like you.
