Well tomorrow I think I am going to leave at 2pm. Why? I want to go have some beers at Hooters and watch the game. Same excuse as far as I am concerned

I hope you enjoy those wings and beers

I'm genuinely curious here... when I leave to go get a sick kid or watch their honor roll ceremony- my work is there waiting for me. In my position, there isn't any pawning stuff off

No one is saying this is a problem if you do it one time. But if there are 10 people and 8 have kids and all 8 do this twice a month then the 2 without kids are picking up a significant amount of work.

And if those 2 decide to take a day off because they want to, it's just a dged completely differently.

My wife (no pics) misses a lot of work dealing with therapy sessions for my autistic son. She works a lot from home making up for it and also is allowed to work from home most of the summer even though their office had to return to work.

People do have lives outside of work and you have to learn to balance it.
Work to live not live to work.

People do use that excuse, but from my experience it's usually something serious like an illness and not "I have to take my kid to soccer practice".

I got chewed out by my last boss because I left at 4:50 one Friday to be at my son's soccer practice. The week before I had left at 5 and ended up late, and I didn't expect it to be an issue as I was always well past 40 hours on a Friday afternoon. frick that dude.

He didn't stop me from doing that on Fridays the rest of the season, but almost always found something "important" that he needed to talk to me about so I would spend the 30 minute drive on the phone with him. fricking annoying, it was never something that couldn't wait until Monday morning.

he just said he has a solo workload to manage and you clearly work on a team (or gave a team workload example)... apples and oranges

What field are yall in where if someone leaves early you have to catch all their work immediately that day then and there?

I’m real estate. If we have a municipal or investor meeting tomorrow but Jim in the next office has a child’s event tonight, it’s likely going to be a late night for me.

Another example is travel. If me or Jim with kids has to go to a conference, I’m the one getting volun-told to go 99% of time.

I get it and don’t mind usually, but the coworkers with kids often take it for granted.

No one questions the nobleness of the reason your wife is missing, but you can't understand why other people don't find that fair when they have to spend $4.50/gallon on gas to commute and be away from their families to drive back and forth?

Everyone works on a team in some capacity. His work may wait on him, but if that becomes a habit it starts to affect other people.

I still don't understand. What type of work requires you to "pick up" additional work? I'm thinking this is a bunch of sour grapes.

People where I work early out all the time - just because. We get so much vacation, sick, personal time, and floating holidays, people just peace out at noon on a Thursday. Legitimately nobody gives a shite.

Do yall work for the IT helpdesk or something? Like what do you do where it is a problem?

People with kids think their work schedule, time off, etc trumps people without kids schedules in every workplace. Cindy left today at 2pm because her kid blah blah blah.

In one case someone is contributing to the continuation of the species and trying to raise a valuable member of society, and the other is contributing absolutely nothing of value. If you want to see everything as black and white, an excuse is an excuse, that's fine. But not everyone is going to see it that way.

I used to be like you. We have an 7 mo old and no regular family help to watch him when he gets sick. It's a tough spot to be in and I'm open admitting how wrong I was to have this same attitude at one point in my career.

Its all about perspective. Until you're dealing with it, its hard to understand. When it comes to my kid, my career can kick rocks. He is my focus.

This thread is full of a whole lot of people being intentionally obtuse.

Every one of you knows OP is not talking about having to get your sick kid or occasionally needing a remote day because of a school closure.

We've dealt with some unreasonable requests when it comes to kids (we are very lax/come and go, but most know how to keep from abusing it). I'm talking "I have to leave at 2:30 for carpool every day" type requests. Mind you, we come in at 9:00 and are lax/off record about lunch hour. Yeah sorry, you aren't working 20-25 hours a week because you have a kid.

At the very least, you would have had to have proven yourself to get that sort of treatment. Someone new or someone who has come off as lazy ain't getting that accommodation met. Sure, we might allow it for someone who is very efficient with their time and who we've seen doing random things at off hours as well.

Sure, but that same person agreed to a contractual obligation to perform some sort of work. It's not that meta

the location and pace of task completion are irrelevant if the deadline is met

Ok the travel thing makes sense. But if y'all have a nutcutting deadline, Jim needs to have his bride step in.

It shouldn't be. Frankly why you take off shouldn't be anyone's business but your own.

That's fine and no one blames you. But don't get mad if you get let go if you have that attitude.

You aren't holding up your end of a deal you agreed to.

Person with no kids - "I have a long weekend at the beach planned that you've known about for 6 months, I can't go to that conference."

Guy with a kid who's taken off 3 afternoons this month because no one else can pick them up - "man my kid has a huge game this weekend, I really don't want to miss it can you just pick this one up for me?"

You really don't think that happens? Often
