TX DPS Director Escalon: "It was reported that a school district police officer confronted the suspect that was making entry—Not accurate. He walked in unobstructed."

UVALDE, Texas—The gunman behind the mass shooting at an elementary school here lingered outside the building for 12 minutes firing shots before walking into the school and barricading in a classroom where he killed 19 children and two teachers, authorities said in a news conference Thursday laying out a new timeline of events.

Victor Escalon, a regional director for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said he couldn’t say why no one stopped the now deceased gunman, 18 year-old Salvador Ramos, from entering the school during that time Tuesday. Most of the shots Ramos fired came during the first several minutes after he entered the school, Mr. Escalon said.

DPS officials previously said an armed school officer confronted Ramos as he arrived at the school. Mr. Escalon said Thursday that information was incorrect and no one encountered Ramos as he arrived at the school. “There was not an officer readily available and armed,” Mr. Escalon said.

Ramos shot his grandmother Tuesday morning and then used her truck to drive to Robb Elementary School, crashing the truck into a nearby ditch at 11:28 a.m., according to the timeline laid out by Mr. Escalon. The gunman then began shooting at people at a funeral home across the street, prompting a 911 call reporting a gunman at the school at 11:30. Ramos then climbed a fence onto school grounds and began firing before walking inside, unimpeded, at 11:40. The first police arrived on the scene at 11:44 and exchanged gunfire with Ramos, who barricaded himself in a fourth-grade classroom. There, he killed the students and teachers.

A Border Patrol tactical team went into the school an hour later, around 12:40, was able to get into the classroom and kill Ramos, Mr. Escalon said.

Yet another failure at many levels it would appear. If true, these details paint a very different picture.

There are so many reasons why school security is vital to the safety of our children, and a mass murdering gunman is just one of many.

This is becoming even more sad, if that’s even possible. Seems like failures on multiple levels gave these kids and teachers zero chance.

What a fricking shite show the response to this was from LEO. Until this afternoon I was inclined to give them some room to clarify the timeline and benefit of the doubt, but it sounds like it is even worse than others were speculating.

While the narrative turns to the "who to blame" let's not forget that some crazy fricken who was odd went "unnoticed" by friends and family and somehow reasons it was a good idea to kill children. There's the issue. why is he nuts and why didn't someone say something.

We can sit here and point fingers at every little detail, but the fact is.. In smaller towns, there is a different sense of security. There are a lot of "what ifs" but that doesn't change anything.

The reality is, we live in a world where what use to be unimaginable is now possible. While I am pro gun, if he wasn't able to buy an AR15 until he was 21 this wouldn't have happened. How can someone not be allowed to purchase a hand gun until they are 21, but can purchase an AR15 at 18.

That's on par with our government. shite that doesn't make since. At 18 you should be able to buy a gun to protect themselves, but instead you have to wait until you are 21, but if you want a high powered rifle that has so much power you can't even hunt with it and its too big to keep on you for protection then you can buy it at 18.. I say make it legal at the age of 17 to buy a gun for protection then 21 for an AR15.

But nothing will change and because of that we just have to accept when these things happen. You think they will just all of a sudden stop? It might happen again next year or it might be 5 years from now, but there will be another fricking idiot 18, 19 year old who will easily go buy an AR15 to shoot up another school, hospital, grocery store, church or maybe even a ball park next.. and it will be the same ole thing.. People are heart broken, say things need to be changed.. A week later move on to something else.

Well, time to start keeping school children locked up and under armed guard, so that we can retain our God given freedom to allow any angry 18 yr old kid to walk down the street and buy a military grade machine gun as easy as buying a gallon of milk.

This is what real freedom looks like, folks. MERICA
