People need to learn how to read a map

A friend of my wife’s was taking back roads to Austin. Apparently she was speeding through a town at night and was pulled over. She was going the speed limit her phone told her to go
Then she asks the cops where she is. Unfortunately, this probably isn’t the first time this type of thing has come up with the cop. Anyway, lady’s phone dies during this encounter and she has to follow the cop and flag him down, just so she can get headed in the right direction.
My wife expected me to be sympathetic, and I just started laughing. I can’t fathom how people are so clueless and reliable on GPS. Hell, my wife uses it in town constantly. We don’t exactly live in a place like Houston or Austin where we need to navigate around massive traffic jams either.
TLDR; people are too damn reliant on phones and need to read a map

What map? I guarantee you there isn’t a Rand McNally atlas in the glove compartment any more
Have you learned Morse code and semaphore in case the phone systems go down?

You get a map for every place you travel these days?

You map readers with your fancy technology... it'll let you down.
I only use the sun, stars, and migratory bird flight patterns.
Got dang hippies

IMHO, most maps aren’t needed for the long trek because you can get on a highway or interstate that takes you most of the way.
The problem becomes finding the fricking hole in the wall turnoffs once you get off the main highway. THAT tends to be when you need GPS and when it can’t handle it worth a shite.

More practical advice is to tell her to keep a phone charger in her car.

The actual point of this story is to charge your GD phone.
Being unfamiliar with an area between A and B is not unheard of, especially if you haven’t gone that way before.

I can't tell you how many hours of my life I have saved using Waze to navigate through BR or even here in Little Rock because there is a wreck that you have no idea about that is adding 45 mins to your commute.
A regular map can't tell me that

How do you know your "directions"?
Spatially, what is positioned where relative to something else? ie, this is north of that (ex, Tiger Stadium is west of Manship School)
Route-based, where you know the path? ie, go to this, then turn left then go to this then turn left again
Amazing how many people do not think spatially...and is weird to me

I’d be more concerned about her inability to plug a phone into a charger than her inability to navigate.

A friend's 19 year old made the trip from Covington to Dallas last year. ON the way back he somehow got turned around and made it as far as Abilene before he figured out he wasn't going in the right direction.

Everybody check out Rand McNally over here

I don't ever use a GPS while driving locally, boat yes though. It is nice to have to see the traffic situations and alternative routs when I have to go out of town and don't know the local streets.

It really is astonishing how many girls I know who rely on Google Maps to get to work every day.
When I first started my job it took me 2 trips to fully memorize the route.
