"The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship." -James Madison
We can reliably determine that among the non-religious there is clear majority support for pro-choice. I can't think of many issues where the divide between the religious and non-religious are more clear. I don't even care about abortion specifically as it will never come up in my life, but I have never been in favor of religious beliefs dictating law.
And no I'm not saying this is a slippery slope situation, I just think this is a case where the people's stance isn't being enforced by our "representation"
even if you swing the percentages a few points to account for biased polling in favor of pro-life you still end up with over 50% pro-choice and around 35% pro-life
If you take out religious people then 68% of people are pro-choice and 19% pro-life
there is no chance a pro-life law would pass without the religious vote

No. We have legal prohibitions on many things that are prohibited in the Bible. Murder, theft, etc.

This is bullshite, there are christians that have abortions and atheists against abortion.
The post above is the better answer.

I am non-religious and I think abortion is wrong. It is killing somebody and more so, the majority do it because that life would be a nuisance to them. It shouldn't require religion to see that is fricked up.

sure you do. you support laws because of a moral framework. that moral framework may come from being freedom minded, christian minded, progressive minded, climate minded, giving (welfare) minded, LGBT minded etc.
that would be akin to saying "you shouldn't have opinions on lgbt policy because you are in fact lgbt," or "you shouldn't let your race dictate your opinion because you're white/black."
if you're saying you just don't like the moral framework of christianity, say that. don't say you don't like religious beliefs dictating law.

Does making murder or theft criminal blur the lines of church and state?

A. Most laws are based on religion.
B. You don’t have to be a person of faith to believe that an innocent life is destroyed during an abortion.
C. There has to be, at the minimum, a time we decide that life begins. Society has already decided that time is weeks before we leave the birth canal.

The question that must be answered is when does life begin? If it is conception, then all rights must be made available to the unborn at conception.
If you say it is just a clump of cells with foreign DNA, I would argue that “science” would proclaim a “clump of cells with foreign DNA” to be life if it were found on Uranus and not in a uterus.

OK provide an example of a law that only exists because of the religious vote that the non-religious are majority against.

I think There are non religious arguments that life starts at different stages of development.
Most people don’t want to get into the bioethics of it, but it’s not like conception is a purely Catholic concept.

Never heard of Judaism?
quote:
In Jewish law, a fetus attains the status of a full person only at birth. Sources in the Talmud indicate that prior to 40 days of gestation, the fetus has an even more limited legal status, with one Talmudic authority (Yevamot 69b) asserting that prior to 40 days the fetus is “mere water.” Elsewhere, the Talmud indicates that the ancient rabbis regarded a fetus as part of its mother throughout the pregnancy, dependent fully on her for its life — a view that echoes the position that women should be free to make decisions concerning their own bodies.

Abortion isn’t a church issue.
It turns out that murder is frowned upon in secular society as well.

I Actually meant the opposites I think I started to say “I think There are different religious opinions” and went into “it’s not like there are no”
Idk, but I edited my post because there are obviously different religions opinions.
Edit: I meant To say “non religious” lol. And yes I have heard of Judaism. I am A practicing member of that faith.

No one is making abortion criminal. They are making it more inconvenient. You'll have to drive your car a bit.
