An organizer of the voter-approved effort to incorporate St. George testified Monday that race and income played no part in the carving out of the boundaries of the proposed majority-White city. But an attorney for the city-parish challenged Chris Rials on that point, noting that the predominately-Black and low income Gardere area was originally included in the proposed St. George boundaries during a 2014 incorporation attempt but excluded from the proposed city that voters backed in 2019. The proposed city is middle- to upper-middle-class.
Rials, the vice chairman of the petition that drove the 2019 election where 54% of the voters living within the proposed boundaries of the city voted in favor of its incorporation, explained that Gardere was removed from the boundaries because only 1 in 20 voters in that area signed the 2014 petition. Gardere, he said, was excluded due to "lack of participation" in the 2014 process. The signatures of 25% of the registered voters in the proposed city were needed before the matter could be put before voters, he added. "We never looked at race. We didn't look at income," Rials said while being questioned by Brett Furr, a lawyer for East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome and Metro Council Pro Tem LaMont Cole, who have sued to stop the new city's establishment. The trial of that lawsuit kicked off Monday in the 19th Judicial District Court and is expected to last at least a week.
I am completely SHOCKED that EBR played the racist card right off the bat!
quote:
"Baton Rouge, like many cities, isn't without challenges. We've got our problems. But the evidence will show that the creation of St. George isn't the answer. In fact, it will make things worse," Furr told the judge.
Probable winner for understatement of the century. "We've got our problems..." Really?

Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul testified that, after St. George's creation was approved by voters, the city-parish asked all department heads to prepare two budgets: a standstill budget and one contemplating a 20% budget cut. Such a cut, he said, would have a "significantly detrimental impact" on the police department's ability to do its job and would force layoffs.
BRPD isn't doing their job now. He says it could get worse?
I can't wait for tomorrow's testimony.
TUESDAY UPDATE
quote:
A local Fortune 500 business owner who staunchly opposes St. George becoming East Baton Rouge Parish's fifth municipality told a judge Tuesday he believes the creation of a new city will have negative financial and social impacts on Baton Rouge.
John Engquist, who also is a developer, opted last year for H&E Equipment Services to be annexed into the city of Baton Rouge rather than remain within the proposed boundaries of the city of St. George. At the time, Engquist threatened to pack up his publicly-traded company and move out of state should the firm and his nearby planned Materra residential development be forced to remain in St. George.
Engquist testified that he believes the boundaries of the majority-White St. George were "racially motivated," a perception that he said harms his ability to recruit employees. "Perception becomes reality," he said.
Wait a minute? Are they trying a Civil Rights case or a civil suit against the filing to incorporate? How is "they are racist" and "we need their money" even relevant to this suit?
quote:
The mayor and Cole's attorneys will continue calling witnesses Wednesday. They have called at least 10 so far. The defense could call nearly three dozen witnesses.

It will definitely make Baton Rouge’s problems worse. The likelihood that Baton Rouge elects good leadership after this is 0.0%. It was 1.0% before but at least there was a chance.
That being said, it will be fun to sit back and watch it all burn.

Layoffs??? They can’t fill their vacancies now because of their failed policies.

Yeah, it's not like we have a live look at how black folks enrich a city.

The time tested legal precedent of you can’t do this it’s not good for me.

Of course they go straight for the race card. It’s the only strategy in their tool chest.
In their minds, everything is a direct result of race. When it’s the only card you have, I guess you play it first.

Layoffs? What a clown. Who the frick would want to work under this clown show administration?

I signed the petition in 2014 and when I saw my name was "removed" with no reason given, I bailed on EBR. What a corrupt dump. I wish St George well, but I highly doubt the corrupt in charge allow it to happen, especially at the state level.

We need St. George’s tax dollars to pay our police so you guys in St. George can’t form a city and start your own police department.
That’s what they are telling us.

Let’s just be honest. It kind of is about race. One race has serious problems following societal norms and has a culture of violence.
They are all about making everything about race until it doesn’t work in their favor. I’m tired of trying to sugar coat it. It’s about race, one race needs to get their shite together and when they do then no one will care what color their skin is.
We tried to go the “color doesn’t matter” route and they keep making everything about race and tell us color does matter. So this is what you get.

Hey everybody! Make sure you go out and participate in the democratic process, perform your civic duties, and vote!
Oh wait that majority vote thing only counts if the majority approve of what they’re supposed to approve.
Voting matters less and less with each passing year. And it’s not just in the US. Look at the Brits and Brexit. It passed years ago, and yet similar to St. George, it’s still being discussed and challenged.
When the democratic process itself does not do what it was intended to because a minority group can still dictate what passes and what does not, is it really democratic?

Once again, filthy rich white liberals will play the game to maintain complete power.

Baton Rouge will only get worse, with or without St. George.
Conversely, St. George will only get better without Baton Rouge.

As the mayor of St. George, I will institute a police dept and chief not afraid to police.

I’m not. If they waited to play it after all the facts came out, it would be even more obvious that it is a complete non-sequitur, Hail Mary, Bull shite claim than it already is in this context.

So part of the city’s argument against incorporation of St. George is that incorporation would take funding away from a police department that doesn’t even have jurisdiction in St. George?
Isn’t that kind of the point?

What a dumb flawed logic
There is a fricking problem in Baton Rouge. It's systemic and has been for decades. You can't undo that shite by inventing an imaginary border and renaming part of the city. The spread will continue. "St. George" will eventually have the same issues as well.
As ugly as it sounds to some Baton Rouge needs gentrification in the north. Purge the corrupt bullshite that fricks up progress. I'm just bummed that it will never be done. Politics are too fricking corrupt in this town.
