I've read a couple of random articles recently about his work with Black Sabbath and RHCP, and I followed every step of the making of Metallica's Death Magnetic back in 08, and from what I've seen he's an absolute joke who was at the right time and right place to have his name attached to a few great albums that would have been great no matter who the producer was. Death Magnetic was an abomination to my ears and I actually hated what seemed like the inspiration for the album, which was Rubin laying on a couch for 10 minutes and telling James and Lars to pretend they were doing the follow up Master of Puppets, he did the same thing with Black Sabbath. What do you y'all think

He's done some decent stuff, but he's absolutely butchered some other stuff.

Tom Petty's Wildflowers is the first one that comes to mind. This was an album that could have been a masterpiece, but was ruined by Rubin's "under production".

He’s done some amazing work and produced more of my favorite albums than any other producer.

But they can’t all be home runs, as he has produce a ton of albums. I thought he lost his touch about 10-15 years ago but the new RHCP album is fantastic.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik wasn't too bad a record either.

Spot on, brother. I'd heard for ages how great Rubin was, then he hooks up with my favorite band and they shite the bed after not releasing an album for six years.

In my view, Death Magnetic marks the real moment Metallica "sold out," because it sees them give the part of their fanbase that trashed the Loads exactly what they wanted, Master of Puppets Part 2. That's boring as hell.

Highly overrated these days.
His early work with RHCP, Beasties, Cult, etc, were great because he had no frame of reference for what he thought they "should" sound like.
Not the case with later acts he worked with, i.e. Metallica, Sabbath, who he simply made recreate classic songs of theirs and call it a day.
Anyone can go in and say "well this worked before, so let's try it again"...
