Driving down Florida to Downtown Baton Rouge is depressing

Traffic on the interstate and a client meeting had me take Florida to downtown. It’s like the closer I got to Downtown the more depressing it became. People sleeping on the street, trash, dilapidated buildings, graffiti. Just people walking around aimlessly, most in the street.
Then you cross under the interstate and downtown looks like Disney World by comparison.
Poor Boy Lloyds was good though.

I worked downtown from 2004-2019. Used to make that drive daily but hadn't in almost 3 years until a few weeks ago. It was always shitty but I was astounded by how much more shitty it's become.

IDK about mornings but around lunch the homeless are all going to that shelter to get lunch....pretty depressing sight

Its been going that way for years. Its just that there was more activity among all of the homeless, trash, etc.
That homeless shelter (It is still there right? I have gone down government when I go that way) brings a lot of homeless in the area.
What is interesting is that going down government there are areas that has improved over the years, but Florida just continued to decline.

Downtown BR does look pretty nice at the street level, which is kind of crazy.

I've had to go down there twice the last few weeks and it looks like you're in another country. If it wasn't for the few Asian places and Picadilly, you could just bulldoze the entire tract and the leftover rubble would be an improvement

I had a guy say he was hungry yesterday and asked if I would buy him some food at Mcdonalds. I was in a hurry so I said here is $1.10, you should be able to get something off the dollar menu. Instead of walking in Mcdonalds, he walked right past it. Pissed me off.

It’s really amazing what has happened to Florida Blvd./Florida St. since the 70s and 80s.
I remember the nice places along that corridor. Catfish House, Sonny’s BQ(still there), that little Polynesian restaurant, Putt Putt, Cortana Mall (of course) Bon Marche’ and the two cinemas, Steak and Ale, the donut place on Florida @ Lobdell, and the nightclubs in the Wooddale and Melrose East areas.
I remember the nice places along that corridor. I drive it to the midcity area daily. I grew up in that area and it’s definitely depressing seeing what it looks now vs the late 80’s and even into the 90’s.
I’m hoping the bug Amazon center will help improve some of that area

correct. Now it is worse because of St. Vincent Depaul (free meals) and tons of gov't and NGO mental health and human services HQs are near there.

When I moved here in the mid 90s the area was a dump and a ghost town from about Lobdell west and then you got down to downtown and it was a bigger ghost town. In the early 2000s to about 2014 Downtown was revived and looked to be spreading out and improving in every direction, now it is returning to sh!t and a ghost town again. This slow creeping change began around 6 years ever so slowly. Broome and her peeps in the parish government have destroyed everything Kip tried to build. Kip had his flaws but he wanted to improve EBR. By the time Broome leaves it will be a ghost town again. Equity = when everyone gets a handful of sh!t.

In the area leading to downtown, yeah. In 1989, heading out on Fla Blvd was still the main retail corridor of Baton Rouge, though.
