According to The Athletic, Meyer was unfamiliar with star players such as Aaron Donald and Deebo Samuel.

quote:

Meyer said he conducted a six-month deep dive on the NFL that included interviews with his former Florida and Ohio State players as well as a study of the salary cap. But multiple sources said Meyer was unfamiliar with star players around the league, including 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel, Seahawks safety Jamal Adams and Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, a three-time NFL defensive player of the year. “Who’s this 99 guy on the Rams?” Meyer asked one staffer during the season, according to a source. “I’m hearing he might be a problem for us.”

You have to remember though dude was fully entrenched in coaching college football for the last 20 years, it wouldn't shock me if he wasn't all that familiar with the stars of the NFL.

It seems reasonable he could have been, but after seeing all the other dumb stuff about him that's being reported, it wouldn't surprise me.

I guess not knowing the names isn't completely crazy. James Harrison once said that he hadn't watched a football game for fun in like 10 years

My money is on sarcasm that is being overblown

Seahawks safety Jamal Adams

Wasn't Adams a 5 star? It seems like Meyer would be familiar with him. Although, I guess when there are 25 or so 5 stars over the course of 20 years, names get lost.

These guys deal with hundreds of prospects each year to varying levels of degrees. Unless adams had OSU in his top 2 or until late in the process, it’s not that surprising that Urban doesn’t really remember him coming out of high school. The second you sign one class, you switch gears and start obsessing about a new crop of 14-17 year olds.

This is brutal. That being said, I've never seen the media go after a coach like this.

College coaches aren't sitting around drinking beer on Sundays and watching the NFL. They are watching film on high school recruits and worrying about their own team and trying to make them better.
Just like NFL coaches have no idea who the top 10 HS Recruits are every year. It doesn't concern them to know.

I wonder how much of the NFL college coaches watch and vice versa. I think of the quote Elton John said about practicing music at home. He said “I do 120 shows a year. Why the hell would I spend the free time that I have on something I do for a living? You don’t expect a baker to bake pies right after coming home from work.” If you’re a college head coach who spends all week on football, you would think they would like to unwind a bit and do something else on their free time instead of watching a football game. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if Meyer barely watched the NFL during his time at Florida and Ohio State or even as a CFB studio analyst at Fox.

Remember when Donovan McNabb claimed he didn't know about the NFL's sudden death OT rule? Lulz

I’d expect him to educate himself on the competition when he accepted the job of head coach in the NFL.

Nick Saban is the greatest CFB coach of all time, and I bet he would suck in a CFB trivia contest. That’s because he is so hyperfocused and doesn’t give a flying frick about any team or player he isn’t coaching or coaching against in the present or near future.

But anyway, no telling about Urban. He’s the most fish-out-of-water NFL coach since Barry Switzer, who was hired by the Cowboys in ‘94 after five years out of coaching and running the wishbone. Difference is Switzer inherited the most talented team in football and an intact staff.

Speaking of Switzer, I can’t speak to ill of him because given his upbringing it’s a thousand wonders he didn’t end up dead or in jail. But he inherited the best college football team in the country at Oklahoma and the best NFL team with the Cowboys. Didn’t have to build shite at either level.

No possible way this could be true.

It is funny however, and I like it.
