You weren't hanging around my parents or any of their friends. They also complained about long lines and other restrictions of the day. Like a lot of men he worked with, my dad had a friend install an auxiliary 25 gallon gas tank on his compact truck.

Yes, I know. That's the exact point I've been trying to make in this entire thread. The entire 70's had actual (pay attention, I'm saying actual) gas prices on a national average below $1. Pull up a chart, that is about $3 or less in today's dollars. I would gladly pay $3 unleaded 87 octane at this very moment. See where I'm going with this?

I mentioned this thread to my 85 year old mom. She told me in 1974, when my brother got killed in a car wreck where we lived in Miss., we couldn't bury him on Sunday because the gas stations in Bastrop, LA, where he was being buried, weren't open on Sunday due to the rationing. Long story short: We had to plan his funeral around when we could buy gas to get back home.

Nope, I'm not sure.
I'll make the observation that today's prices have gone up, and will continue to go up, out of proportion to the early 70's, resulting in today's gas prices being quite high. Admittedly, we're not experiencing the shortages of the 70's. In addition, in the 70's it felt like we were being held hostage by the Middle East since they had the oil. Now that we've got out own supply of oil, it feels like we're being held hostage by an administration in charge that admits it wants to continue an abrupt move from fossil fuels to alternative fuels.

I remember people people going nuts in 2008 over gas prices. But I wasn't around for the 70s gas shortage. Did the prices go up a lot or was it just a matter of getting gas? I've seen pictures from that time and there were cars lined up in the road waiting to get gas.
This is kind of off topic, but I was at my mom's house earlier this week.. And we were just having a conversation about what's going on in Ukraine and she said she remembers when she was in high school and everyone having to meet in the gym to learn about communism. This was the late 50s, but I never knew they were making kids in school aware of communism and why they should reject it, etc.

I remember my 5th grade teacher was complaining about gas jumping from .75 cents to one dollar: "If it goes up to $1.25, I won't be able to afford to travel to work here anymore."
