So the EU is currently offering Ukraine membership. The US in December said it was up to the Ukraine if the wanted to be in NATO.
Now Finland is looking at joint NATO admist all this.
This is the reason we are where we are in Ukraine...more NATO countries on Russia's border, so he lets add one up north for good measure.
Lets further isolate Russia and Putin and inflame the situation. Isolating Russia since the 90's is why are here. The idiotic foreign policy of the US and EU the last 25 yrs is what got us here.

Why do you care about Russia? Frick them.

Has the intelligistas at the State Department laid out an end game for this yet? The EU basically threw gasoline on the flame. Do we really think if these sanctions make their military inoperable that Putin is just going to tuck his tail between his legs and go home?
Are we at the point where the binary conclusion is regime change or appeasement to some degree?

It's not like Putin invaded Ukraine in a naked act of aggression.
Thousands of tank killing fire and forget Javelin like weapons are going to Ukraine.
Putin could have gotten away with absorbing the Russian areas, but Ukrainians have a very long and bitter history with Russia.

They are just trying to look like they are doing something so that when Putin has what he wants and ends it they can declare victory. The west is deballed and basically helpless in this situation. All they can do is bluster politically unless they want to set off a world war.

Finland’s decision whether to join NATO is Finland’s own. How could OP consider this some sort of inflammation of Russia?

I care about Russia bc they have a huge nuclear arsenal and a narcissistic ego maniac as a dictator.

The dude just invaded a sovereign nation for no legitimate reason.
That will have responsive behaviors from any other sovereign nation who he may target.
Putin is doing the inflaming.

Then by all means, grovel at their feet and always ask for permission.

I'm no fan of Putin or Russia. After reading, digging, and listening to some old lectures, the US foreign policy has created Putin and what Russia is today by isolating them after the fall of the USSR, breaking agreements, etc.
Putin has been reacting to the US/West foreign policy for 20yrs. I don't like him at all, don't like his free speech crackdown, and how he stays in power, but I think what we have today is in large part because of the US foreign policy.

Maybe, partially
HIndsight is great and all. But I'm not really going to chastise the west too hard for being aggressive in posturing against a regime that just got done with a multi-decade run of murdering millions.

So because Putin feels threatened by other countries defending themselves against future attacks, we should lay down and apologize for not trusting him? frick that. We and other countries have the right to take defensive measures without spilling a drop of blood (or oil). Nothing Putin has done in the past gives the world reason to trust him.
I can’t, for the life of me, figure out why so many here are so against NATO and other countries joining NATO to form alliances just in case shite goes down.

Russia isolated itself and it's crumbling from within for these choices.
That's why Russia freaks out when any of its former puppet countries makes better choices putting them on the bath to more prosperity than Russia.

The US has never prevented Russia from becoming more of a liberal democracy and joining in modern markets and agreements. Russia rejected that b/c their ruling class would rather be plutocrat-billionaires ruling over a dying state.

Do we know if and how close they were to joining NATO? Because our very own CIA director said this like two years ago in a book:
LINK
quote:
"Hostility to early NATO expansion," it declares, “is almost universally felt across the domestic political spectrum here.” On the question of extending NATO membership to Ukraine, Burns’ warnings about the breadth of Russian opposition are even more emphatic.
“Ukrainian entry into NATO is the brightest of all redlines for the Russian elite (not just Putin),” he wrote in a 2008 memo to then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. “In more than two and a half years of conversations with key Russian players, from knuckle-draggers in the dark recesses of the Kremlin to Putin’s sharpest liberal critics, I have yet to find anyone who views Ukraine in NATO as anything other than a direct challenge to Russian interests.”

The same thing could be argued about Hitler and the Nazis. Still didn't mean he should be going around conquering Europe.

This is total BS, Russia had every opportunity to liberalize and join the civilized nations, Yeltsin turned control over to a narcissistic paranoid and these are the results.
