Long story short, my parents need to bring a fairly substantial amount of cash into Mexico to pay vendors for an event. I told them it's probably a bad idea to bring that much cash through customs and they should figure out a different way to get cash once they're in Mexico.

Chase Bank does not exist in Mexico, otherwise they could just go to a branch once they are there.

Anyone have experience with this? As a poor I have never had to deal with carrying a large amount of cash internationally.

I’m glad to hear you enjoyed your Friday night, but enough about that. This is about traveling with cash.

Curious, what is a large amount of cash? What vendors don't accept credit card in this day and age? There are many banks in Mexico they could probably pull cash out of with a Chase debit card, but they would incur what I think would be a small fee.

If they are intent on bringing the cash from the U.S. to Mexico, they'll have to specifically declare it if over $10K.

Why don't you tell them to contact Chase and see what they suggest? You should also attempt to speak to someone at the U.S. customs and see if they have any suggestions as well.

ETA - another option is contact a large bank in Mexico where they are going and see if they will allow a withdrawal for the amount they need if they have a Chase debit card (and the money is obviously accessible from that debit card).

It's relatively easy to send yourself money through MoneyGram or Western Union.

I’d just carry it with me. Wear it on my person in the airport and in my carry one while on the plane.

I have one of those waist packs that are thin, stretch, I use sometimes and it goes under my shirt anytime I travel overseas and need to have a large amount of bills for whatever reason.

You Carry say 20k on your body? That seems like an impressive number of bills to conceal

Reason.com is always reporting about American cops seizing large amounts of cash from folks for civil forfeiture despite lack of evidence of criminal activity. I bet Mexican cops are equally untrustworthy.

I’m not sure of the exact amount, but they would definitely need to declare it if they bring it.

Not sure why these vendors aren’t taking credit card, seems ridiculous to me but here we are.

They have been in contact with Chase but apparently their takeaway from that conversation was “I guess we are bringing cash.”

They are planning on bringing thousands of dollars in cash into Mexico to pay some sketchy vendor who doesn't take credit cards?

I hope they have their will in order before they go

As a beneficiary, I do too.

It’s not sketchy vendors, it’s just smaller vendors for a wedding. Flowers and such.

Are travelers checks still a thing?

Why can’t they wire him the money via Western Union or something?

It’s guaranteed that TSA will confiscate any significant amount of money they see on a scan in luggage. They get a kickback/reward for this from Customs or law enforcement. You then have to prove in Court that you earned the money and the Feds usually make you an offer to only give you back 50% or they keep you in court forever. Welcome to giving up your Constitutional rights for the war on drugs.

You’re aware that the government of Mexico runs customs in their airports, right?

Unless you’re saying TSA wouldn’t let you through to board your flight.

I’m talking about leaving the US. That’s why I said TSA. Read better.

TSA cannot confiscate cash, they have to alert law enforcement who then could potentially confiscate it.

Know the law better.

I specifically said TSA gets a kickback/reward to report to another authority. Again, read better.

This seems very risky. It also sounds sketchy. I have lived in Mexico and any vendors that would have charges in the thousands of dollars and would do a wedding for Americans would have a bank account that they could wire the money to.

You specifically said tsa would confiscate it (see above). Wholly inaccurate.

Again, know the law better.
