Moldova would almost immediately come under Russian control, whether directly or indirectly, linking Transnistria to Russia again. Control of all of the northern Black Sea would boost Russia economically and significantly threaten Romania and Bulgaria.

The Romanians are going to annex Moldova.

Now if Ukraine can hit Rosneft's Tuapse refinery which can provide fuel for Crimea and the remnants of its Black Sea fleet.

Less than 300 miles from Ukraine controlled territory puts that refinery within range easily

Might as well take out the Tuapse terminal for a two-fer.

ISW April 6 Update

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky indicated that Ukraine does not have enough materiel to contest the battlefield initiative.

Zelensky stressed that additional Western security assistance is necessary for Ukrainian forces to effectively defend Ukraine’s airspace against the intensified Russian strike campaign and increased Russian aviation operations along the frontline.

Zelensky cautioned that the arrival of all promised F-16 fighter jets from Ukraine’s Western partners in 2024 will provide Ukraine with only 10 percent of the fighter aircraft Ukraine would need to completely defeat Russian aviation and restore Ukraine’s ability to operate effectively in the air domain.

Continued delays in US security assistance are specifically impacting the capabilities that Ukrainian forces need to respond to the increased tempo of Russian mechanized assaults in eastern Ukraine.

The Kremlin explicitly threatened its long-term ally Armenia on April 5 over Armenian outreach to the West following Russia’s failure to prevent Armenia’s loss of Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023.

The Russian MFA also continues to threaten Finland and claimed that Finland has “lost its independence in making foreign policy decisions” since its accession to NATO — a narrative that the Kremlin routinely used to falsely claim that NATO was controlling Ukraine and using Ukraine to threaten Russia.

Chechen Republic Head Ramzan Kadyrov announced on April 5 that 3,000 former Wagner Group personnel will join the Akhmat Spetsnaz unit following successful negotiations between Akhmat and Wagner commanders.

Russian forces recently made confirmed advances near Avdiivka and Donetsk City.

Russian President Vladimir Putin passed two laws on April 6, offering Russian society some concession for its sacrifices to support Russia’s war in Ukraine.

I hate the gaslight corporate media and distrust them most of the time. I just think if they appear to be throwing in the towel, things are really bad there. But, I don't know, maybe there is a narrative shift to make sure the funding goes through (is that still pending?). I still don't know what to make of that NYT article about the 12 CIA spy bases on the border and a decade of meddling there.

You have to see what the agenda is they are trying to peddle. I see it as the MSM selling the fear porn that without more western aide Ukraine will fail. This is why u see these articles popping up now. Scare public opinion and pressure the house to pass more aide.

Ukraine is not about to calliope. However they are shell starved and AA missiles are running low and they are not able to launch an offensive. However Ukraine is still defending and inflicting heavy losses on Russian attacks. Ukraine is willing to slowly give up territory and bleed the enemy.

However, they do need more aide namely shells and air defense.

If we're going to indulge the Post today, I thought it was interesting that Orban was lying about his convos with Trump:

quote:

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has antagonized European allies with his autocratic and pro-Russian tendencies, met with Trump last month and afterward claimed Trump told him he will force the war to end because “he will not give a penny” to help Ukraine. Orban’s statement was false, but the former president didn’t want to publicly contradict him after entertaining him all night at his Mar-a-Lago Club and admiring his toughness and anti-immigration positions, according to a person close to Trump, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a private conversation.

During the meeting, Orban spoke at length about Soviet history, Russia’s desire for Ukrainian territory and the military challenges facing Ukraine, the person said. Trump listened but was noncommittal, the person said. An Orban spokesman did not respond to a request for comment.

Here's a gift link: Inside Donald Trump’s secret plan to end the Ukraine-Russia war

The article promises more than it delivers, but it indicates that Trump's plan is for Russia to officially annex Crimea and the Donbas.

Which is honestly something that Ukraine would likely eventually accept, if it came with NATO and EU membership and the security guarantees that came with it.

But I don't think either side is likely to be ready for that by January.

The latest RT/Kremlin message.

Meanwhile in Russia: Vladimir Solovyov insisted that Ukraine cannot be allowed to exist, explained why Russia should not negotiate with the West and promised, "We will kill all of them."

Populist Peter Pellegrini has been elected president of Slovakia, succeeding the liberal Zuzana Caputova.

Mr Pellegrini, 48, defeated the pro-Western Ivan Korcok, a former diplomat, with 53% of the vote.

A former prime minister, he is an ally of Prime Minister Robert Fico, and shares the PM's dovish attitude towards Russia. Mr Fico and his allies now control Slovakia's parliament, government, and soon the president's office.

Slovakia had been one of Ukraine's staunchest allies before Mr Fico came to power in October on a pledge to halt supplies of Slovak Army military stocks to Kyiv. With Mr Pellegrini replacing Mrs Caputova, Ukraine has now definitively lost a voice of support in an EU and Nato capital.

Mr Fico has called for an end to Western military support for Ukraine, an immediate ceasefire, and peace talks with Moscow. He said recently President Vladimir Putin had been "unfairly demonised" and argued admitting Ukraine to Nato would mark the beginning of a third world war.

Mr Pellegrini's campaign echoed some of that Moscow-friendly rhetoric, accusing Mr Korcok of being a warmonger who would send Slovak soldiers to fight in Ukraine - a constitutional power the president does not have.

On Sunday Mr Pellegrini vowed "to ensure that Slovakia remains on the side of peace and not on the side of war".

"You don't have to worry that the Presidential Palace, as it has been for the last 10 years, will become a centre of oppositional, opportunistic power that will harm the government, that will harm the state abroad and will rejoice in the failures of the Slovak government," he said.

Once Mrs Caputova steps down in June, there will no longer be any high-level official in Slovakia - a country which barely a year ago donated its entire fleet of MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine - who unequivocally backs Kyiv's effort to defend its territory with force.

Mr Korcok expressed his anger at Mr Pellegrini's campaign tactics, saying it was fear that decided the outcome of the election, and "that fear was spread by those who are hidden in state positions".

He said of the result: "It turns out that it is possible to become President of the Slovak Republic not only by spreading hatred, whipping up passions and pushing people to the barricades, but also by painting the opposite number, that is to say, me, as a candidate of war. I will not forget this."

The liberal pro-Western opposition also accuses Mr Pellegrini - as head of the coalition Hlas party and chairman of parliament - of remaining silent as Mr Fico took a wrecking ball to Slovakia's criminal justice system, notably abolishing the Special Prosecutor's Office, which was set up 20 years ago to probe serious corruption and economic crime.

It had investigated a number of senior officials in Mr Fico's Smer party, and had been overseeing the prosecution of those believed to be responsible for the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kusnirova in 2018.

The killings were a seismic event in Slovak politics. The fallout ended Mr Fico's second premiership in 2018 and led to the liberal, pro-Western Zuzana Caputova being elected president on a wave of popular anger at official corruption and organised crime.

Robert Fico's government recently set its sights on Slovakia's public broadcaster, submitting plans to abolish the institution and replace it with one under virtual state control. Those plans were put on the back burner after a surprisingly poor showing from Peter Pellegrini in the first round of the presidential election two weeks ago.

The opposition fears a reinvigorated Robert Fico will resubmit them - and they say President-elect Pellegrini is unlikely to stand in his way.

Ukraine would accept peace on those terms if it got reparations and a half of the natural gas extracted from the offshore gas fields that would be split between the Ukrainian and Russian exclusive economic zones. However, Russia will never accept Ukraine joining NATO. So Trump will propose peace. Putin will reject and Trump will be forced to put up or shut up. At that point I expect him to put up and greatly increase the aid to Ukraine so Ukraine can win.

Blinken has to say what he's told by Biden. And Biden has Sullivan calling those shots.

Every report has indicated that Blinken is regularly pushing internally for more aid to Ukraine. It's Sullivan that's the problem. Sullivan is the architect of the administration's stupid "escalation management" strategy.

This is one of the main reasons the Russians launched their “special military campaign” in the first place. Putin looked at Biden and he saw a weak, corrupt, and feeble minded dolt and he knew he had nothing to worry about from the US as long as the Biden regime is in power.
