Mardi Gras sucked when all the parades consolidated into basically a single uptown route.

It was infinitely more fun when parades were spread out all over the city and different parishes and areas.

It’s just a consolidated shitty madhouse now.

Same as you. As I’ve gotten older, the idea of putting all that time and effort to catch beads and party isn’t appealing. Getting old means time is more valuable and responsibilities of family and work takes priority over things like Mardi Gras. It’s just adjusting to life.

I'm not from New Orleans, so I don't have the sentimental attachment to MG that many from there do. I think that plays into it.

Jones took me several years ago, and it was okay. The friends/family they go with rent an apartment on St. Charles for bathroom and storage use, which made it slightly more tolerable that it would be without that, but it's still a lot.

It's kinda similar to the reasons we gave up our LSU season tickets. Unless you have a really nice setup, tailgating and sitting at the game just isn't worth all the crap you have to deal with surrounding it.

EDIT - I usually end up at Spanish Town and the St. Patrick's Day shitshow if I'm in BR during them, but I wouldn't say I particularly love either of them as well. They tend to be filled with trashy wasted people, and it is difficult get anywhere because of Uber/Lyft shortages.

Spanish Town at least passes by my office, so I can hang right there and avoid a lot of the undesirables.

2018 was the last straw. I got a ticket for doing 10 over on a nearly empty Earhart expressway from a State Trooper heading into the city with my family on Mardi Gras day.

Pissed off that he had to work. Been in your shoes.

I thought I was over it & I went to get coffee yesterday morning off of Napoleon & seeing all the people & the floats lining up made my skin tingle.

For me, did not appreciate fully Mardi Gras (and the people) like I do today until moving around the U.S. Discovered a seriousness and bland approach to life in too many places; drained me.

From then on, the Mardi Gras joy went to a new level.

Mardi Gras is dead to me.

And I used to love it.

Mainly because I don’t want to go to NOLA parades any more and they’ve killed it in Metairie.

I could take it or leave it. Went to Krewe de Vieux the other night since we had family in town that had never seen a parade.
My wife will want to start hitting the parades this Thursday, luckily we have a friend that lives just off St Charles so we go meet them and can use the bathroom etc at their house.
If it wasn't for that I would not go. And while I am at the parade I hang out in the back and drink.

As I get older my tolerance for crowds lessens.

But we will be in the quarter Monday night for some party at Arnauds so that should be lots of fun.

I haven't been to a parade in decades. My brother-in-law lives 3 blocks off the Endymion route in Mid-City and usually has a big crowd stopping by and in and out all day long.

I'll run over to his house around noon to deliver a big pot of gumbo, rice and potato salad or sometimes jambalaya in enough quantity to feed 50+ people-----then I go back home and let them have at it.

I hated driving to and from parades in all that stop and go traffic----mostly stop. Then finding a parking spot in an area you're not taking your life in your hands getting to and from your vehicle.

To those that enjoy, have fun and be safe.

I got over it once I got out of my teen years. It’s just not my scene. I appreciate the Mardi Gras tradition and I love that it makes Louisiana unique, but I think I’m good if I never see another Mardi Gras parade in person. I’ve seen plenty.

I don’t drink, I don’t really like crowds… I understand why people like it. It’s just not for me.

I still love Mardi Gras, but the last time we went to NOLA for it was 2016. We tried Lafayette which is fun, too. In 2020 we went to Gulfport/Biloxi for their parades and it was really nice.

I used to try to get to as many parades as possible. Now I just try to get to one, for the little kids bc my older kids know I’m just a crazy y’at looking for nostalgia.

I deal with drunk idiots at work enough as it is. Couple that with people quitting to go to parades and it isn't a fun time for me

I didn’t grow up going to parades so it never did much for me, even in college TBH. I’m right in the middle of everything and I’ll go to a couple parades next week but that’s it.

Somebody in Texas told me once, "If people in Louisiana stopped spending all their time planning for the next party, whether it be a crawfish boil, a tailgate party, a festival, or a Mardi Gras event, and spent all that time focused on holding themselves, their schools and their politicians accountable to improving their state, Louisiana might be worth investing in, once again."

There's probably some truth in there. Of course, that does not take into account that Louisiana is constantly just trying to patch things up from the yearly storms and the party atmosphere is needed just to forget, if only for a little while, all the problems.
