LA State Rep. Ivey: “Legislature Lazy, “Too Stupid to Work Together”

State Representative Barry Ivey had his Bulworth moment on Wednesday.
Rep. Ivey (R-Central) put political niceties aside and lit into his colleagues, accusing them of putting political agendas ahead of the needs of the people and of trying to protect their own power instead of giving the state's residents a fair shake at the polls.
quote:
“You look at every bill that passed in this last year, what you’ll find is if it wasn’t backed by deep-pocket, corporate special interests, it didn’t have much of shot,” Rep. Ivey said during his speech. He added that he would not proposed any new legislation for the rest of the year, saying that he was tired of dealing with the legislature's "B. S."
quote:
“I’ve told people this institution is the laziest group of people I’ve ever worked with because it’s true, because we’ve got problems everywhere, and we don’t want to solve them,” Rep. Ivey said.
That remark caught the ire of Rep. Mark Wright (R-Covington), who asked House Speaker Clay Schexnayder (R-Gonzalez) for a point of order immediately after Rep. Ivey made his comment. Rep. Wright was the person who made the motion to table Rep. Ivey's bill.
quote:
Rep. Lance Harris (R-Alexandria) took the floor after Rep. Ivey completed his speech. Rep. Harris's remarks earned the ire of House Democrats, including members of the Black Caucus.
“Life does not give you what you want," Rep. Harris told his colleagues. "It gives you what you deserve."
Rep. Kenny Cox (D-Natchitoches) stood to object to Rep. Harris's remarks, asking if Black Louisiana residents deserved only one minority-majority district despite making up one-third of the state's population.

Looks like redistricting is getting entertaining at the Capitol these days.

If the black population is dispersed across the state in a wide manner, it is kind of hard to get a district of roughly a million people which is over 50% black.
Doubly so since the 2nd district is no longer just Orleans Parish, meaning it has to stretch from NOLA to BR to get one black district.

One of the drawbacks of democracy. You can only vote for the ones that choose to run. Folks should be able to outsource their representation.

Does this faulty logic actually resonate with people?

The districts are supposed to be compact and have at least some connections between the different constituents in it.
The previous 4th district (Cleo Fields’ Zorro district) got declared unconstitutional in the 90s when it zig zagged from Shreveport to Monroe to Baker to Bogalusa.

Deserve has got nothing to do with it. Do White people deserve to have to live around soaring crime rates?

That's a fair and reasonable point. However Rep. Wright didn't make that point. He moved to cut off debate and vote. That's what ticked off Ivey. They didn't just vote down his bill, they stopped him from presenting it. It's kinda a dick move even if you disagree with someone.

The debate was over increasing the number of MM Supreme Court seats from 1 to 2 (out of 7).

Where's Barry been, it's the most dysfunctional legislative body in the US. Louisiana isn't called a Banana Republic for no reason.

Point still stands.
If you are required to make the seats about equal population size and contiguous, it gets extremely hard to create minority majority districts without hopscotching across about three or four major metro areas.

Probably only a handful of times that something succinct has ever been spoken in that Legislature. That was one of them .

Why does it always have to be about race?!?!?
Why can't it be about the culture and values of the people of an area.
Problems and interests in Northwest Louisiana (e.g. salvinia killing the lakes) are very different from the problems of Southwest Louisiana (e.g. coastal erosion).
You should try to group districts based on their shared needs and interests.
This whole cult of identity politics needs to stop.

This is why the previous second black congressional district got killed. No common issues between the constituents other than skin color.
The needs of a person in Shreveport are far different from the needs of a person in Bogalusa, which is almost as far apart as you could get in the state without replacing Bogalusa with Boothville-Venice.

Ivey was right too. Our legislators are mostly idiots. There are some thick skulls in the capitol.

Race can be a factor, the problem is that is often THE factor and it is bullshite.
If you draw a district to "not dilute the minority vote" aren't you inherently diluting the majority vote? Why is that ok.
