Victim's Rape Kit Helped Identify Her as Suspect In Another Case, DA Says

A few interesting quotes from the article:

quote:

DNA samples collected from victims of sexual assault are being used by the San Francisco Police Department to identify them as possible suspects in other crimes, the San Francisco district attorney charged this week, adding that he would encourage legislation to ban the practice.

quote:

The practice of using DNA from a rape kit to possibly identify the victim as a potential suspect in another matter is apparently widespread, according to Kate Chatfield, chief of staff to Boudin, who survived a recall effort last year in a test of the public’s willingness to support progressive district attorneys amid headlines of rising crime. She said that using DNA from rape kits in this way might date back to 2015, when crime databases in the region were revamped.

quote:

Advocates for rape victims bristled at the possibility that evidence used to catch attackers could actually be used against the victims.

You want rapes to go unreported? Because this is how you do it.

Simple solution: Don't rape and you won't get ID'ed as a rapist.

What kind of crimes are we talking about? I don't think they are using DNA to solve burglaries or white collar crimes. I imagine this would be for murders and the like.

I have no problem with this.

If you murder someone and then get raped, that may be karma, but you still should do time for the murder.

Its a tricky thought process...

But if someone committed a serious enough crime to where they left DNA behind, I guess I don't care how they are caught.

In San Francisco, where the type of person that would be involved in a rape AND committing felony’s is probably shitting on the sidewalk and leaving needles everywhere?

So maybe I should have, but I didn't know we are setting up DNA databases.

I thought once the DNA was taken to solve a case, it was destroyed.

A lot of rape victims also may have committed a crime at some point. I think we still want them to come forward as a rape victim.

Also, I call BS that the SF police chief doesn't know what his cops are doing.

Can your DNA plead the fifth amendment kind of like the bullshite seizure laws that charge the money with criminal activity?

Common practice for police to run warrant checks on victims of crimes as they’ve ran them on me the 2 times I filed reports. I don’t see a problem here
