Houston folks: moving to Oak Forest area

Moving from BR after living there for over 10+years. I could probably write a separate post about my thoughts on BR and while the feeling of leaving is bittersweet, overall I am more than enthusiastic. I am leaving for work relocation but I would have moved out of BR-proper if this opportunity didn’t come up. Too many issues in the city and things aren’t trending in right direction. But will miss the people and south Louisiana culture.
With that being said, need some recommendations on things in Oak Forest area.
- churches: we are both Protestant and Baptist raised. Any churches that aren’t super evangelical conservative and have good small group type atmosphere as well coupled with benefits of larger church?
- pre-K: we are zoned to Oak forest elementary but a year or two from enrollment. What pre-K program are worth it? I’m looking at Pace academy.
- any close by neighborhood restaurant/bar recs without going over to the Heights?
- any other advice or input on the area that’s useful?

Pace was good for pre k. Mine went there when they first started. Lots of kids went to vanguard program from there to oak forest.

Really great location to get places in the city. In addition to mentioned above, the Wakefield area is under rated. Great Heights is a great brewery and the new d'Alba is a nice addition for food.

D’Alba is a good local restaurant that just opened. Also local foods.

Check around to see if any of the public schools have pre-k program. When we were in the NW Heights area our daughter was at Garden Oaks for a couple of years, they did a Montessori pre-K thing back then. It was great for her.

Welcome. My wife and I live in Garden Oaks (no kids). Oak Forest elementary is good, better than garden oaks Montessori which we’re zoned to so good on yall. A lot of people I know send their young ones to St. Rose of Lima.
Church wise… I grew up in Houston and have always attended Second Baptist Woodway. 15min drive from the house. Not sure on the more local Baptist churches.

Spots on Wakefield are sweet. Did they ever re-open up the Petrol Station?
Cottonwood off Shepherd is another cool spot.
There’s an Aldi off Shepherd but at that point you might as well go to HEB in the heights
Tacos a Go Go on 34th/TC Jester
Flying Saucer Pie Company
There’s a lot of mixed use stuff going up on 34th east of Ella (by the slowpokes coffee shop). Haven’t been thru in a while but those should be filling up in the next 1-2 years
There’s also a HIIT fitness class called “The League” that is great if you are into that. Very welcoming crew over there

We live in Timbergrove, we’re moving out of HISD first kid will enroll in Kinder Aug 2023.
We’re zoned to Sinclair which is at or just below Oak Forest level. We heard the quality dropped since covid. Kids still wearing masks. I’d do lots of research to avoid buying there getting frustrated and sending your kids to private.

Welcome to the neighborhood! Note or south of 34th? We are also zoned to OFE. You pay a premium for it, and will still need to send to private after elementary, unless Black middle turns more.
Can’t help you with churches, but a lot of the good places have been named.
Great neighborhood, friendly neighbors. Hang out at the parks and meet some neighbors. Krogers gets the job done, but HEB in the heights is much better.

Property crime seems rampant. I’m just south of you in Timbergrove and it seems way worse in Oak Forest.
