Team medal ceremony for figure skating postponed due to inquiry

My money’s on a Russian caught doping. Thoughts?
NY Times article

The ceremony was abruptly postponed shortly before it was to begin on Tuesday night, according an official from U.S. Figure Skating who said the athletes had been given no reason for the delay. The United States figure skaters and ice dancers had been dressed in their Team U.S.A. gear and were just about to leave for the ceremony when they were told to turn back, the official said.
A spokesman for the International Olympic Committee, Mark Adams, called the delay an “emerging issue” at a news conference on Wednesday. He said Olympic officials were consulting with lawyers and the International Skating Union, the sport’s global governing body, to resolve the matter.
“A situation arose today at short notice which requires legal consultation with the I.S.U.,” Adams said. He added that the I.O.C. would provide an update later Wednesday and that the issue “will become clearer.”

I knew something was up when they kept delaying the ceremony. I love figure skating, but it is always a hot mess with scandals.

Did I miss the free skate? I guess I did ... or has it been shown in USA yet??

Why would Team USA need attorneys if it was ROC issue? I know nothing about this, but seems as it would be a Team USA issue if they are getting attorneys involved with the ISU.

Belle when did this air here in the US? I waited for it last night but never saw it.

The US might have attorneys to hash out how the medal situation would be handled. Do they bump everyone up or just disqualify the person or person's who were caught? That could change the medal standings.
Also, current rumor is that it is Kamila Valieva who was the first woman to land a quad. This could be a huge, messy scandal.

Where is that rumor coming from and what’s the thought process? She’s the hot name so seems easy enough to point to her. But if she is that good why cheat?

I think that's pretty common now a days.

Maybe they are getting their attorneys involved because if ROC has someone pop a positive, Team USA wants to make sure they get bumped up to Gold instead of just having the Gold vacated.
Also, attorneys could be looking into if they committee only disqualify the 1 person that tested positive and ROC still has enough to claim gold; do they still get gold or is the entire team DQed?

This is for the team event which aired on Sunday night.
The men’s gold medal is up tonight.
I wonder if this is a bit like the 2000 gymnastics all around in Sydney when the Romanian teenage gymnast tested positive and there was general agreement that it was a result of over the counter cold medicine that was taken the day before.
I think the Russians are dirty as hell in sports like cross country skiing, biathlon, and ice hockey
I also think there are way more clean sports in the Winter Olympics with essentially no PED use like curling, freestyle snowboarding and skiing, and figure skating, where PEDs are not nearly as beneficial as they would be in weightlifting, track and field, MMA, etc.

The attorneys are being consulted by the international orgs (ISU and IOC).

The thought of having a team DQed for this just made me

If it is doping, no sure why they need legal teams. They should have anti-doping process already.
Visa/Nationality issue? Someone from another country skate illegally for another country?

I am seeing it on several of the figure skating forums. They say it was not a doping issues but that she tested positive for a banned substance. I hope it is not an Andreea Raducan situation who lost her gold medal because she took cold medicine.

I’m calling it now based on her coach.
She was taking diuretics but not for the reason most athletes do to mask PEDs, but because her coach wants all of his skaters thinner than Kate Moss in 1995.

Isn't the language being used the same as the officials used with the French judge scandal in SLC? Granted that played out publicly but it seems to be a boilerplate statement for figure skating.
As much as I'd like to see the US elevated to gold I think it's much more likely that it's a cold medicine type of issue. We're multiple days out so there shouldn't be a delay due to the testing of a "b" sample. Lawyers presents the possibility that perhaps the Chinese are suspected of aiding the Russians with the "closed bubble", providing plenty of opportunities for Sochi level shenanigans.
I hate to throw this out there but this could also be a distraction ordered by Putin to draw attention away from Ukraine? If it's organized doping the parallels to 2014 are hard to ignore.

quote:I hope this is the case. Using a VPN I watch A LOT of Australian TV and they include a 'certified banned substance free' statement in ads for supplements. If it is an innocent mistake or something NON-PED the coaches pushed on her then let the athletes keep their medals and sanction the coach. In that country a young athlete is going to do what she is told to do without questioning it.
