747,300–868,374 Casualties for the Axis
1,129,619 Casualties for the Soviet Union
LINK
Even after the Germans surrendered there were still plenty of them that kept on fighting due to fear of falling into Soviet hands. And for good reason too. Out of the nearly 91,000 German prisoners captured in Stalingrad, only about 5,000 ever made it home to Germany and that wasn’t until 1955.
Good video on the holdouts : LINK

the opening story about the deposits of bones in the middle of the steppe is horrifying

The bodies would all be frozen solid so hopefully it wouldn’t be too bad

It does seem that most of what we learn about WWII in the US is about US vs. Nazi's and the holocaust but I'm sure there are many that would argue that the Eastern Front in Europe and some of the Pacific battles both had their moments of pure evil with lasting effects for decades.

I read somewhere years ago that had the numbers broken down and averaged out. It was something like 300 people an hour died on average, which would be five people every minute.

Somewhere there is a pic from stalingrad of a pile of horse hooves.. from all the horses that the germans ate to survive.

This video does a good job illustrating the WWII casualties by country and timeline in the war.
Russia and Germany numbers are staggering

The fact that the last Japanese soldier surrendered in the 1970s after being told by his commanding officer that the war was over speaks volumes to the dedication of the enemy

I watched an interesting documentary on German drug use during WWII. Apparently everyone in Germany from Hitler down to the common foot soldier was hooked on a combination of Meth and Benzos. The premise of the story was that Hitler was tweaking during most of the war, and it impacted his decision making process, with dire consequences on the eastern front. I'd never heard that before.

Speaking of they need to do a better job teaching about the Holocaust. I saw this earlier today and it’s absolutely pathetic

They invaded in June. Winter came early and they over extended along the front. If they had focused on Moscow originally , they likely cut off the head of the snake. Given the situation in Sept 1942, if they had simply by passed Stalingrad they likely take the Caucasuses and open fuel supplies. The Germans war gamed the invasion of Russia several times. Most of the scenarios ended with negative results. They refused to believe them. Same thing with D Day. Their war games correctly predicted the landing site to be Normandy. The Germans refused to believe that this was the actual landing site until July.
