247Sports grades LSU football’s coaching staff

Kelly had the Irish in College Football Playoff contention once again in 2021 and it appeared his 2022 and 2023 units were the best equipped to finally win the program’s first title since 1989. He can probably push LSU into contention in 2023 with a couple of Top 5 signing classes and a half dozen instant-impact stars out of the transfer portal. He certainly built a tremendous staff to get those type of players on campus and develop them into superstars. Perhaps the biggest hire in assistant coaching circles was Frank Wilson, the McNeese State head coach who resigned from his post to become the Tigers’ running backs coach for a second time. Reviews among those in the industry are mixed with Cincinnati offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock as a game-day coach but, again, time will tell. This is a solid staff with SEC connections and a shared championship mentality.
quote:
New staff: Frank Wilson, associate head coach/running backs (McNeese State, head coach); Brian Polian, special teams (Notre Dame, special teams); Matt House, defensive coordinator/linebackers (Kansas City Chiefs, linebackers); Jamar Cain, defensive line/run game coordinator (USC, defensive line); Mike Denbrock, offensive coordinator/tight ends (Cincinnati, offensive coordinator); Joe Sloan, quarterbacks (Louisiana Tech, offensive coordinator); Kerry Cooks, safeties (Notre Dame, analyst); Robert Steeples, cornerbacks (Minnesota Vikings, assistant special teams); Cortez Hankton, receivers (Georgia, receivers)
Holdover: Brad Davis, offensive line
Top 3:
1. Florida A+
2. Oklahoma A
3. Oregon A

I equate A+ to just about perfection. I don't see Napier and Florida's staff at close to perfection.

Billy Napier was a better hire than Brian Kelly according to 247.

So I’m in agreement with everything.. But…. Why is Napier an A plus hire?? Ahead of other coaches who have a much more proven track record, against greater competition???

There’s bias there. Florida and the fact that their staff isn’t remotely close to an A+ aside, how is Oklahoma the #2 staff with an unproven career DC at HC after losing their best assistant to LSU? Oregon is #3 with Dan Lanning at HC?

Joke of an article. USC and LSU both have significantly better staffs than any of those 3
ETA:
This is hilarious:

Why two offensive line coaches? Why not? Most programs have two coaches leading the five-man secondary, so why do teams trust one coach to lead all five positions along the offensive line? That’s Napier’s thinking
quote:
Billy Napier built the best Group of 5 staff in the country at Louisiana, so it’s no surprise he used the same blueprint to hire the top names in the sport and tweak a few responsibilities at Florida. He brought four assistants from the Ragin’ Cajuns to Gainesville, including defensive coordinator Patrick Toney
It’s written like a bizarre defense of Napier’s crappy, scatterbrained hiring decisions. But yea, bringing Jabbar Juluke, the worst RB coach at LSU since 2000 who ended up at ULL because he couldn’t get another big time job, is a real gamechanging SEC A+ move

That’s fair. Denbrock I see as a guy with a very high floor but probably not the highest ceiling of other guys. House I think will be a superstar and the recruiting abilities of Cain, Hankton, and Wilson will be a great asset when it comes to putting the fence up around LA.

Kelly is about to snatch Sean Peyton up as an analyst to boost up that ranking….

Yeah, LSU is 4th out of 28 new staff hires which is pretty good. Florida as an A+ makes little sense to me. I like Napier, but his ability to run a major P5 program is an unknown so A+ is pretty bold.

Wrong...its grading the staff, not the individual head coach...

Dude how crazy would that be; imo if that happened that would probably be the biggest steal/hire any program has ever made in my lifetime at least. Would legit catapult this coaching staff to historic levels. Would be up there with the 2003 LSU staff that had Saban, Fisher, Muschamp, and heck even Derek Dooley. Lol

Yea, the only thing that could possibly make those rankings make sense to me is if the HC isn’t weighted as the most important factor in their grading scale. Because if you’re assuming that the HC is the most important person on staff and grade accordingly, there’s NO WAY any teams are above LSU or USC, especially those teams.
Pretty sure the guy who wrote the article is just a moron or a UF fan

This doesn’t bother me because I’m pretty convinced the lsu staff will very much prove itself out over time. But Napier’s staff as A+ is laughable. A lot of his hiring decisions were minor leagues - Raymond is the headliner and frankly that is 100% fools gold.
