Here's how you fix overtime

Both teams get the ball unless defense can score on the first OT drive.
Coin flip decides who gets ball first, gives defense advantage but not too much.
Whoever has more points after a single possession from each team wins, period.
If the offense can't score, a fg would win. If the offense scores a TD, and kicks the xp, other team can match it or go for two to win. First team can go for two and take the risk to be unbeatable.
If there is a time after both teams posses the ball, kickers start at 40 yards out and kick for the win, increasing distances of 5 yards.
The end

so you want to "fix" overtime with a possible kicking competition? This is worse than the current system.

I don't like penalty kicks deciding it.
Go with a bid system where each team brings out an envelope saying where they want the ball. Worse starting field position gets the ball at that spot.

Simple rule change
Current rule: both teams get a chance to possess the ball, UNLESS the first team scores a TD, or if both teams score field goals than next score wins
New rule: both teams get a chance to possess ball. If both teams score equal points than next score wins
Additional consideration: could change OT to only allowing 2 pt conversions, no PAT. This would statistically significantly reduce the chance of a tie after each team has possessed the ball

Just give the Bills the ball after the touchdown. Imagine the drama of Josh Allen being out there, in that atmosphere after that regulation period, in a MUST SCORE situation to keep his team alive

I would do the college ot system starting on the 50 yard line.

How about just play an extra 10-15 minutes? Still tied after that? In playoffs keep doing 10 minute “quarters” until someone wins

Here's the easy fix:
Play the entirety of the OT period like a normal football game.

Here's my idea. A team wins if any of the following conditions are true:
-They have the lead and the ball.
-They score a defensive touchdown or safety.
-After a 15-minute period has expired, they have the lead.
-They have the lead and the ball.
-They score a defensive touchdown or safety.
-After a 15-minute period has expired, they have the lead.

A next score wins still gives the advantage to the team that won the toss.

But does overtime need fixing? I still fail to see the prerequisite for both teams to possess the ball. If you lose the coin toss, man up on D and you’ll get the ball. In that the losing team couldn’t stop the Offense and lost in OT without the ball…that’s on that team for playing shitty D!
I don’t know why folks keep crying about “fair” either. I know teams are tied to get to OT but what if one team, by the coin flip to start the game, gets extra possessions in regulation due to when they receive the ball? How about the possession arrow in basketball? Often a team gets an extra possession over another with that…why not try to “fix” that?
Bottom line, coin flips are a part of the game…if you want the ball in OT after losing a flip, keep the other team out of the end zone.

Team A gets the ball first. The moment Team B touches the ball, it is now sudden death.

A next score wins still gives the advantage to the team that won the toss.

But does overtime need fixing?

But as I mentioned, at the start of the game the flip can sometimes make a team get an extra possession…the coin flips are part of the game. Equity can’t be guaranteed in a football game.

Really this. You could also try not letting the other team get in FG range in less than 13 seconds

College overtime rules but you start at your own 40

Oh no, heaven forbid the defense has to earn their paycheck!

The reality of it is that most these OT games do see both teams get the ball. And just as in any other facet of the game, if you don’t make the necessary plays to win…in this case making plays to keep the other team from scoring a TD…then you lose.

No sudden death. Equal possessions until someone is ahead.
Sudden death just sucks when both teams are scoring every drive.
