We’ll probably pursue more physical larger DBs that play the run and are good in zone

Like La’ron Landry types? If so, I like it

Honestly, I hope Pig Cage has a big Spring, I want to see more of the kid. Not just based off the Bowl game, I went and watch some of his old vids and Hudl... dude plays with a chip on his shoulder. Thats what I enjoy seeing, like he has a point to prove. So I'm rooting for a big Spring from him.

Yes we do. Joe Foucha announced he's coming to LSU and Greg Brooks should announce his transfer to LSU soon from what people are saying

To beat any great offense you have to change up your schemes constantly throughout the game to keep receivers/QB off balance. That’s what Raymond could never adjust with, he was a great man coverage DB coach but when it came to zone it wasn’t his best work as we saw.

Imagine all the SEC teams that will just eat up a cover 3 zone defense. You have to be able to play press man to be an elite passing defense. We went from DBU to zero DBs in one offseason.

LSU has been known for being able to man up against any team, which has allowed our front 7 to feast. Against smarter QB's that know what they're looking at from the defense, zone is pretty difficult to stop them from consistently moving down the field. Zone isn't difficult to pick apart, unless the QB has a low football IQ. I would hope we play combo coverages, as well as mixing it up depending on down and distance AND who we're playing.

IDGAF who is recruited as long as the coaches bring in good players that excel in the system they put in place. No more trying to put a square peg in a round hole like the prior buffoon tried to do.

PP and Stigley can play in any scheme wtf

Well Sting has exactly zero experience playing zone so not sure how you can make that claim and PP7 is amazing for sure but is not great in zone coverage. Hence why in the 2010s, it was always an argument of who was the better CB between him and Sherman, which no one could ever really answer because they excelled at different forms of coverage. Take off the purple and gold glasses.

Just my 2 cents but I think you need press man shutdown corners.

It’s also what we produce here in Louisiana. I like mixing zone and man, so the QB never knows what he’s getting until about one second after the snap. Same with mixing up the rush. Who’s coming, and from where? You’ll find out after the snap.

No it's been solved. That's why all the hardcore accolytes are having issues. Quinn adapted his defense and isn't primarily 3 anymore. The Cowboys run a ton of man b/c man is superior if you have the players.

Everyone is running the Fangio/Staley quarters/2 coverages now, although with the issues v. the run there may be another paradigm shift coming.

We ran zone with Aranda and did plenty of it in 2019

Stigley is going to be a top-10 pick in a few months and unless he gets drafted by the Pats or Saints, he'll run ton of zone.

One question:

Who is our DB coach?

Daronte, Cooks, or TBD?

Quarters coverage is indeed getting very popular. I'm betting we see a fair amount of it coming up.

My only issue is it more than several other coverage package requires good communication and understanding of responsibilities. The change in culture is part of the coaches wanting players who buy-in and have the work ethic to learn it properly. I have confidence in House teaching the other coaches and by roll-down them being able to coach the players in such coverage. However, in todays CFB with attrition, and all the paths to attrition, being able to field a back 7 at any given time who have been around long enough to be fluent in it might be a problem. Can we field 11 on defense when their average time on the team is far below 3 years?

Yeah, House’s defenses at UK really sucked, right.

What? 2 or 3 years ago, maybe. Some of you guys are living in the past. We had one of the worst pass defenses in college football in 2020, and even when the defense improved late this year, we weren’t playing press man. Our CBs were lining up 5+ yards off every play. We weren’t good enough to play tight coverage. We lived on getting pressure and keeping the other team’s passing attack in front of us.

A zone defense can win, even against good QBs. You just have to be multiple and disguise where guys are moving and get consistent pressure. What people often miss is that zone defense and hybrid approaches can be particularly effective at containing spread offenses with athletic QBs who run often.

Read and react defense, but he didn’t teach them how to read. I remember great linebackers almost standing still on plays they should have been moving.
