Essentially no northeast La schools have wrestling now. I know Byrd and Parkway does in northwest La.

How many of the south La schools that have strong football teams annually have wrestling programs?

I realize that the two programs sometimes contradict each other because the wrestling coaches want the wrestler as lean as they can get while maintaining their strength. And football coaches don't want their players losing weight. And a lot of football players can't handle the conditioning that wrestlers go through. Which schools down south seem to maintain a good equilibrium between the wrestlers and football players?

High school football players are usually either wrestling the heavier weights or not wrestling.

There aren’t many 103 football players.

Almost if the Catholic schools are into it.

Rummel used to be extremely good at both. Wrestling is down a bit

In Lafayette, Teurlings Catholic may be the only school with a decent balance. Their head coach wrestled for Brother Martin in NOLA. Years ago, Comeaux had the dominant wrestling program in Acadiana; however, their FB team has always finished near the bottom of the district. Comeaux has a mini-grapplers program where kids 3yrs old can start wrestling. During the Summer, these kids go to tournaments in the Midwest (Iowa) to compete against the best kids in the country. I don't ever remember NOLA or other areas of the State with wrestling programs for elementary aged children.

St. Thomas More had a small wrestling team, but not sure they ever fielded a complete team with 2-deep in each weight category. To my knowledge, LCA doesn't even have a wrestling program. FWIW, Daniel Cormier wrestled at Northside HS and was a 4x State Champion. I grew up in NOLA and was a State Champion back in 1986. I finished my Sr. year with a 28-3 record and won 5 tournaments. I had scholarships to wrestle in college but chose to attend LSU to party like a rock-star

The big Catholic Schools by and large have excellent wrestling programs.

Jesuit
Brother Martin
Holy Cross
St .Paul's
Catholic.

Interms of Public

Fontainebleau
Comeaux
Airline in Bossier
Byrd

The Big 3 are the Catholic Schools in NOLA ....Martin, Jesuit, Holy Cross. They tend to have the most state championships.

Basile High has always had a wrestling program and the football coach encourages his players to wrestle so we strike a good balance. We have been very successful for a 1A school. Competing in division 3 causes us to wrestle schools much bigger than us (D3 is 1A-3A) and we have won 4 state championships as a team, including 3 consecutive over the last 3 years.
The main thing as someone else said is a good youth program. Our parents and youth coaches are very involved. The kids get to high school with a ton of mat time and good coaching already. It’s pretty awesome.

My NELA high school wrestled in the offseason because our coaches wanted us to learn more about gaining leverage. We only competed against each other. I thought it was really good for linemen.

I wish I'd had learned more about wrestling, and had the opportunity to compete. In 1976 & 77, I was the only Farmerville kid that could beat the two brothers who had moved down from Minnesota. I was a 5'8" 165 pound LB and pulling guard.

I thought I was 5'10" until I was in my 20's. Since 10th grade, our FB coaches always said that was what I measured. I never questioned it. One day at one of my fist jobs out of college another short guy told me he didn't think I was that tall. We measured and I wasn't. The saddest part of it was I was 5'7" in 6th grade and only grew another inch.

Not really.

Premier public programs are:

East Ascension (finished 3rd in DI last year)
North DeSoto (state runner up in DII, Top 6 overall)
Basile (DIII State Champs)
Sulphur
Dutchtown

Holy Cross has 28 team state wrestling championships.

That is the most championships for any school in any sport in Louisiana.

Holy Cross has had 241 individual state champions which is more than any school in the country.

These things go in cycles but Holy Cross has a great wrestling tradition.

Wherever Tank Lotief has been has been very good.
Northside, North Vermilion and Kaplan all became immediately better and now that he's at Breaux Bridge, if they don't have a program, he'll start one and become competitive.
