Got the itch to take the old 10/22 and fix it up a bit. Looking at the Boyd AT-ONE thumb hole stock as I like the adjustability it offers for different shooters.

As far as barrels, I’m looking at the Volquartsen THM, Tactical Solutions X-Ring or Shaw. All have threaded ends and are suppressor ready.

If anyone has experience with these barrels or the stock, I would appreciate your input.

Thank you!

I put a Boyd on my CVA 35 Whelen, had to do a little work with a dremel to get a good tight fit. They tell you on the website to expect this. Anytime I've read other's opinion/experiences with Boyd's, they say the same thing. Quality: I like it and it looks 100x better than the black plastic stocks the rifle came with.

Tactical Solutions X-Ring

I have this one, it’s light as a feather and a tack driver. While you’re shopping get yourself a Volquartsen automatic bolt release as well, might be my favorite 10/22 upgrade.

I have an At-One stock on a 10/22. It isn't a lightweight stock, but I do like the adjustability it provides.

If you are looking for accuracy I can personally say that you can't beat a KIDD Barrel. I have a Tactical Solutions X-ring barrel that is really light but it won't give the level of accuracy you will get from the KIDD.

I have the At-One from Boyds on my Savage B-Mag 17WSM.

Great looking stock and very comfortable.

I've been itching to mod out my 10/22 also, but when I started looking a few months ago, parts are hard to come by especially barrel replacements.

post some pics when you get to work on it.

I have two new Brownells BRN 10/22 receivers with bolts.

They had them for sale a few weeks ago and I grabbed them. They both have and integrated picatinny rail on them.

Will be building them out. Already have a green mountain barrel. May put a kidd on the other.
I have an X-ring barrel on another and it’s great.

I have a mag pull stock and a green mountain bull barbell on mine. With the Leupold rim fire scope and Silencerco Sparrow, it’s a hell of fun and accurate gun to shoot.

The 10/22 is a wonderful gun as is. Having said that, there's also an entire industry centered around modifying the 10/22. A few questions I think you'll want to answer about your project: How much do you want to do yourself? How much do you want to spend?

I've got four 10/22's all of which have been lightly accessorized. Most of this can be done by you as long as you have a modicum of skills and tools. As far as improving your gun's function/accuracy I'd suggest these modifications::

1.The first thing I'd do is shoot it w/ and w/o the barrel band. All my 10/22's that have barrel bands shoot more accurately w/o them. You might be surprised how well your gun shoots w/ the factory stock.

2. I do the following to all my 10/22's: alter the bolt release (so it functions like other guns w/ an automatic bolt release); replace the recoil buffer (to reduce the banging the action undergoes while cycling); replace the mag release "button" w/ a lever that protrudes from the bottom of the action (to me, the lever works easier than the button); replace the hammer w/ a target hammer (on my gun, this alone decreases trigger pull significantly from avg of 6-7# to 3.5-4#'s). I'd try that before spending a lot of money on a custom trigger. OTOH, if you want someone else to work on the trigger, I've heard good things about Brimstone on this site. You can buy a new bolt release or modify if yourself using a Dremel tool (5 min or so) or hand files (10-15 min). You can find videos on YouTube.

For reference, all the prices for the above parts are from Midwayusa:
Volquartsen automatic bolt release $10, recoil buffer $11, extended mag release $19 and target hammer $33.

I've been pleased w/ the accuracy of all my 10/22's with the stock barrel. As far as changing the looks, the sky's the limit w/ a plethora of aftermarket stocks. It's all just a matter of how you want it to look. When I upgraded my 10/22, I installed a Hogue overloaded stock and have been very happy w/ it.

Since I wanted a threaded barrel, I ended up replacing the stock barrel on one of my 10/22's with a custom barrel from Feddersen. Their barrels are well respected and don't cost nearly as much as other custom barrels. I've been very pleased w/ it's accuracy. My barrel's the original shorter weight as my gun was built for squirrel hunting, not shooting from the bench. If you get a bull barrel, you'll probably have to enlarge the barrel channel on the replacement stock. I don't have personal experience w/ any of the barrels you mentioned.

I just built my first 10/22. Went with the tactical solutions SBX for length suppressed and the Hogue over mold stock. Fits great and makes for a handy little rifle. Topped it with a cheap vortex 3-9x40 and it's a ton of fun.

I built a ruger charger with binary trigger and SB pistol brace. I am about to add a volquartsen 6 inch carbon fiber barrel. I have a Silco Sparrow can attached to it. Its a lot of fun to shoot.

YT video of one similar to mine.

If it’s a straight stock 10/22 and you just want it to shoot, take it to Clark’s Custom Guns in Haughton and let them do their accuracy package for it. Either that or go ahead and drop the cash on one of their custom 10/22’s and then you will have you something.

While you’re upgrading get the Volsquaren extractor, extended bolt handle, extended mag release and surestrike firing pin. It will greatly improve the reliability of the gun and make for more fun shooting.

SpookeyTiger, Get ready for a FUN and informative ride! The 10/22 is a wonderful gun as is. Nevertheless, there's an entire industry built around customizing and accessorizing it. You need to address a few questions: Are you trying to improve it's accuracy/function (accurize it) or are you trying to change it's looks (customize it)? How much are you willing to spend?

I've got four 10/22's all of which I have lightly customized and one I've accurized. If your goal is to improve the function/accuracy of your gun, here's what I'd do:

1.The first thing I'd do is shoot it w/ and w/o the barrel band. All my 10/22's that have barrel bands shoot more accurately w/o them.
I'd try that before spending a lot of money on a custom trigger or buying a new trigger/trigger group.
3. Try different ammos. The most accurate non-target ammo in my guns is CCI "Standard Velocity." It's actually subsonic, but it functions in my 10/22"s. I wouldn't bother shooting "Stinger" type ammo. You can probably find an accurate high velocity round, but the subs will usually be more accurate.

For reference, all the prices for the these parts are from Midwayusa:
Volquartsen automatic bolt release $9, recoil buffer $11, extended mag release $19 and target hammer $33.

I've been pleased w/ the accuracy of all my 10/22's with the stock barrel. Shoot the gun some and decide if shoots well enough or not. I decided to upgrade my 35 year old 10/22 7 or 8 years ago. I bought a Hogue over molded stock and really like it.

If you mainly want to change the looks, the sky's the limit w/ a plethora of aftermarket stocks. It's all just a matter of how you want it to look and how much you want to spend.

When I did my upgrade, since I wanted a threaded barrel, I ended up replacing the stock barrel on my old 10/22 with a custom barrel from Feddersen. Their barrels are well respected and don't cost nearly as much as other custom barrels. Since my gun's a hunting gun, not a bench gun, I bought a barrel w/ the same contour as the stock barrel. The Fedderson barrel is really accurate. You don't have to spend a lot of money on the 10/22 to accurate it.

Start shooting (and enjoying) that 10/22!
