What's the biggest eye opener that you've had while visiting another state/country etc?

As a teenager I was on vacation in Florida.
We attended a football game in Miami.

I noticed that a lot of homes had bars on the windows.
I asked "why do they have bars on their windows, is it for hurricanes?"
I was then advised that the bars on the windows were there to keep criminals out.

I was raised in a town where someone breaking into your home never crossed your mind.
Everyone left their windows open and doors unlocked at night, and even when they weren't home.

First thing I noticed traveling anywhere was that customer service at stores and restaurants is not supposed to resemble what I considered normal growing up in the New Orleans area.

I'm from Louisiana. The first time I visited states out west I was amazed that people didn't just throw their garbage on the side of the road. It's like they gave a shite.

I remember my 3rd world shanty town, bunch of lean tos... without windows to put bars on. The nice homes in the outskirts had tall block walls around them, with chunks of broken glass embedded in the top couple inches of concrete.

I didn't realize that native Hawaiians are the most racist people in the country and it's not even close.

Everytime I return to Louisiana to visit family it shocks me how incredibly dirty everything is.

There’s trash fricking everywhere. On the side of the interstate, trash on the side of backroads, cars that sit on I10 with that orange abandoned tag for weeks at a time, etc. It makes me both sad and angry.

The amount of unreported racism increases the further north and east you go.

I’m from Ohio, when I was 10 I went to California for a wedding. I saw the scene around Santa Monica beach, it was the first time I ever saw a cross dresser. This was mid 2000s.

You’re really on an anti-Florida rant lately.

Johannesburg, South Africa. Talk about legit income inequality. The stuff they complain about here in the states is a joke compared to that. Luxury hotels, restaurants, and shopping in one part of the city. Then 15 miles down the road you have entire neighborhoods made out of sheet metal with no running water and barely any electricity.

First time in Europe I realized how insulated we are from the happenings in the rest of the world. It seemed like everyone over there was tuned in to every country in the world ..... politics, economies, health care, etc.

There also seemed to be a love hate relationship with the US. Hate us for not being as concerned with them and their issues as they are with ours. Love(envy)us because we're independent and don't have to.

Traveling internationally, older Indians have no respect for waiting lines. They will cut in every God damn one.

Driving into old Mexico from Laredo in the late 90's and seeing real poverty in the shanty towns. And realizing how incredibly lucky we are.

It appeared to be quite strenuous to drive through mountains when I was in that part of TN/NC for the first time in my life.
