Are we talking shithole Mexican dive where nobody speaks English (that has really good food) or a Tex Mex restaurant?

La Tienda is the real deal.

El Tio Taqueria. Reals Hispanics eat there. That’s good enough for me.

Tried this hole in the wall recently and enjoyed it, Birria & Barbacoa de Chivo Los Compadre's

It's so hard to get excited for any Tex Mex in BR once you have had El Tiempo Cantina in Houston.
I'll throw in my vote for Mis Padres, but only the Prairieville location --- and it's mostly because Mis Padres AFAIK is the only Tex Mex restaurant that makes their flour tortillas (except for Tio Javi's - but I wrote them off a long time ago).

JoVi’s Tacos on Coursey is good - they make their own tortillas
Ideal Market is good
And Tacos del Mosco food truck on airline and Jefferson is good but it’s not ‘cheap’

There are some decent authentic Mexican options in the area. Here are a few In no particular order:
1. Tacos El Mosco - food truck that sets up in the parking lot of CSC Customs on Airline
2. Taqueria Don Beto - they have a truck on Airline between Prairieville and Gonzales and a brick and mortar restaurant in Gonzales
3. Birria & Barbacoa de Chivo Los Compadres - Baton Rouge
4. Sahuayo - Gonzales
