BMW owners...

Please share your experience in owning BMW

Is the juice worth the squeeze? Present market prices + maintenance, insurance...have heard from trustworthy car repair shop owner that after 4 years some repair shops do not touch them (why? in repairing one issue, they risk breaking the many plastic components that cost them significantly).

M340i, M3 (non competition), X3M in scope

Got some good advice here to look at lightly used. Doing so. Advice on owning new and used is appreciated.

I bought slightly used (5,600 mi) 540i five years ago. My second. I purchased extended service maintenance plus wheel insurance to carry out to June 2023 (or miles which I won’t hit). I love the car. Loved both BMWs. But I’m getting out of this beemer before maintenance and service coverage ends. Maintenance coverage was bumper to bumper and was worth the up front cost to me. I just won’t have one without full maintenance coverage.

PS: I added a Dinan performance tune at my dealer boosting performance over 20%

TBH, Boglehead here

I’d rather have 100 BMWs in portfolio than 1 in drive way.

Come on now. BMW mechanics need a way to send their kids to a private college too (says the Jaguar owner).

Best route is to lease--you get the best years/ miles, all the maintenance and stuff that breaks is covered. Plus, BMW goes all out to offer attractive leasing terms; they're a mainly a leasing company (>75% leased v. bought). If you say: but leasing is a bad financial move: spending money on a BMW is a bad financial move; leasing is the least bad.

Second best is to buy CPO, but, the CPO doesn't cover everything, you're more miles and years in, and you'll have to pay for maintenance (which is very expensive).

Do not own a BMW out of warranty.

Experience: leased one BMW and owned 2 CPO, but a while back before they became even less reliable as the approach 100K and even more expensive to work on. They're wonderful cars, but eventually I decided not worth the cost.

It's a german car, it's more pricey than a yota

Huh? No there are plenty of shops that will work on them.

Used market is very pricey, i would get new with a warranty. People that buy these cars new generally keep them for a few years and dump them, that's why the reputation is so bad. General "maintenance" on a german car is considered repairs on a honda or toyota. So people buy a 5 year old bmw or audi, don't do the maintenance required, and then bitch when something bad happens at 80,000 miles.

One of my kids’ father-in-law leases a 7 series sedan for 24 months and flips them religiously.

He’s done this over the past decade with no issues with the vehicles that I’m aware of.

He drives less than 20k miles per year.

He leases as a business expense.

I have an architect friend who bought a lightly used ‘20 model 5 series sedan that has been a good car for the year plus he’s had it.

That’s all I got.

Most of my peer circle are Lexus folks. Me included.

I would give you a good deal on a 2022 X5.

I’ve never driven another vehicle that drives that nice with all the features. I would not do the run flat tires that come on them again. I’m always worried taking it on trips that I would get a flat.

This is my first new car ever and I have come to realize, I’m just not a car person. I would rather spend that money on trips.

They drive like a dream. But you don’t want to own one outside of the warranty/maintenance coverage. They are maintenance nightmares, and most are mechanically totaled before 120,000 miles because of the extreme costs of repairs and upkeep. I think BMW’s might have taken that crown from Jaguar recently.

Which is astonishing if you knew how awesome BMW’s were 30 years ago.

If you have the means to be considering a M3 then you "should" have the means to cover the expense of driving one. I've had 3 of them over the years and all were great cars but yes maintenance costs $$. if you are buying to say you drive a BMW don't do it, if buying for the driving experience a M3 provides then go for it. And take it to the local car club of america auto cross events. You'll be blown away at what the car can handle and how far away you are from handling it.

Look at the Genesis line. Designer came from BMW. Better value and much better warranty. I love mine.

Value of BMW juice vs squeeze depends on income? Nope.
