my unsolicited and unoriginal thoughts on GOT

I finally gave in and binged the show over the past couple of months.
The general public/pop culture has never been more right about anything.
The first few seasons were truly incredible. Several moments were unlike anything I'd ever seen or felt in a TV series. 5-7 or so were also very good but not quite as high quality imo.
But holy shite, 8 was a botched abortion. I simply can't understand how they fricked it up so badly. I knew it was coming but wow, people weren't exaggerating.

Same.
You should have just skipped the last season.
Its better that way.

Until you see it you can’t understand.
And you have to remember the hype that was built up around the story and it’s conclusion. It was a true cultural phenomenon.
I don’t know how else to describe the last season but as a literary suicide bombing.

Weren’t the writers on the verge of moving on to their next project during the last season?
Worst last season of all time considering the stakes. Lmao out of sheer boredom I’ll watch some scenes from the final season but that’s about it

Definition of ending with a whimper and not a bang

They were. It was a Star Wars project.
Rumor has it they lost the contract due to the way they ended GOT.

You're not alone, I don't think I started watching until Season 5 or so but what a ride.

there were a couple websites, with big forums. Probably as much activity as you see here, and I don't just mean the MTV Board. Huge background pages, detailed explorations of each character, house, etc. And a running in-game discussion of each episode, like looking at the Scoreboard here during an LSU game.
I was following one, and....
it just stopped. Like, a thread hundreds of pages deep, even through The Battle of Winterfell- and then zero posts after. Not even an angry tirade or a WTF, just ...
no more posts.

Binging it makes it so much more obvious. The storylines start becoming much more convenient and less calculated and twisting as the show goes on. It’s pretty bad in most of season 6 with flashes of it in season 5. There’s just some choices and cause/effect situations that would have never happened in seasons 1-4 and clearly only happened because they couldn’t come up with a better idea which is a shame.
Once you hit season 7-8 it’s a show for a much dumber audience and gets dumber every episode. It’s a far cry from the political thriller that is seasons 1-4.
ETA: like someone said above, there was an obsession with this show that lasted years that essentially vanished overnight. The top show in terms of quality and capturing a wide audience silenced in an instant due to poor writing.

The overall storyline behind the collapse of GOT is that as GRRM’s story became less clear as the books ended, and even further when his future plot outline became less and less detailed, the GOT showrunners were unable to adequately fill in the details within the plot

You are correct
1-4 - GOAT tv
5-7 - marked drop in quality
8 - gas station bathroom coathanger abortion

All this.
8 is so bad, it's ruined my ability to go back and watch the first few seasons. Only show that's ever done that.
Hell, I'm still happy to rewatch Dexter...so long as I stop after Trinity.

I blame the fatman and his laziness.

Turned out the show runners were a couple of rich kids who were never really qualified to run this show. I blame GRRM for bailing and letting hacks finish the job.
But I have to say, I never thought they'd be able to suck me back into that world. However, HotD pulled it off. I can't wait for the next season.

It started out as one of my all time favorite shows and ended up as something I don’t care to ever watch again.

There’s a reason you never hear the names David Benioff and D.B. Weiss in the entertainment industry anymore

The whole book/TV show process was very complicated. GRRM was a genius that got sidetracked by HBO starting the TV show in the middle of his project. In all of the books he would write 10,000 or 20,000 pages of stuff that his editors would have to whittle down to 800 to 1000 pages. That worked for books that would come out only when they were ready, but it didn't work for HBO who was under time pressure to produce a show each year. Towards the end Martin just phoned it in, and the HBO writers went on the the story they wanted. Because of the money he was making, GRRM dgaf. The show suffered as it went along because his genius that we saw early left the show. Those 2 guys that ran GOT for HBO simply thought they knew better. They were wrong.
I have rewatched every episode over the last couple of weeks, and quite frankly, I am stuck getting through Season 8. The long, endless night battle against the dead was almost impossible to watch. Towards the end I really didn't care who won as long as they got it over. I doubt I will watch the rest. Sad.
