Lottery Winners - Remaining anonymous ??

I came across this USA Today news article today and honestly don’t understand why states like Louisiana do not allow the winner to remain anonymous. Seems to me that being the publicized winner of one of these mega jackpots would not only be extremely dangerous for the winner, but also the winners family members once the winning is made public. That said, is there any good reason for the states such as La to make this information public?

Lottery mentality is the opposite of hope.

Private winners don’t generate as much publicity for the lottery.

You remain anonymous if you claim it through a trust.

Back when Louisiana legalized the lottery, the only games were Pick 3 and Lotto...both LA-only games. The multi-state games like Powerball and Mega Millions came in later
ETA: but I agree, it should be changed to give a jackpot winner the option to remain anonymous. Back in the 90's when Lotto first started, the jackpots were only a few million compared to today's jackpots in the hundreds of millions or even topping a billion.
Plus back then, winners could move and have an unlisted phone number and generally avoid people being able to find them easily. Nowadays, amateur sleuths can track you down pretty easily via simple online searches.

In Louisiana, you can claim the winnings under an LLC or trust.
Don’t know if that will allow you to remain completely anonymous if someone wants to dig into it, but would make it a little more work
ETA: not going to lie, I would 100% let it be made public. Mostly just because I’d love telling all the random people that come from every corner of my life to frick off

Congratulations to Eatadick LLC on their big lottery win!

Knowing the winners was thought of as a way to make sure the lottery is on the up and up. If it’s anonymous then how do you know it’s not the lotto commissioner’s cousin.

That’s why I plan on paying for my and all my family members’ names to be changed after tonight.

I would have zero faith in a lottery system that hides the winners.
Hell I have zero faith in any of them as is.

quote:Not necessarily. Members of the trust (the individual winners) have to be identified to the lottery for tax purposes. The identity of the winners are available to anyone who files a public records request.

Also, winners are made public to show people that REAL PEOPLE win the lottery.

LLCs are easy to lookup
Right - all you have to do is go to the Secretary of States webpage and you can see who the members of the LLC is. And anyone can order a copy of the corporate filings to see who the members/managers of the LLC are. Don’t think creating an LLC does anything in terms of providing anonymity.
As far as a trust, not sure how that is set up and whether one can fully remain anonymous by doing so.

Even if the anonymity can be cracked wouldn't it still be better than having your name actively publicized?

I'd make it publicly known I won the lottery. If someone wants to FAFO, bring it. Idgaf now, just think if I'm a millionaire.

It’s because Louisiana is, and always was, run by crooks and charlatans.
quote:
The Louisiana State Lottery Company was a private corporation that in the mid-19th century ran the Louisiana lottery. It was for a time the only legal lottery in the United States, and for much of that time had a very foul reputation as a swindle of the state and citizens and a repository of corruption.

There was one winner in a state that did not allow anonymity who used their lawyers to claim the prize. So the lawyer was made public but not the actual winners. Curious how that deal was brokered.

A trust is a pain in the arse to set up. Just give me my money, my family and I will move and change our names.
