Right now the New Orleans area is in a panic over the low water flow in the Mississippi River due to the drought and possible salt water getting into more drinking water supplies since it has already impacted a few systems in Plaquemines Parish.

I know it maybe a stupid idea, but could the Army Corps of Engineers just turn off the valve to the Atchafalaya except for the water that is used at the hydroelectric dam at the Old River Control Structure? That way more water could make it way down river instead of going down the basin. This would be only a temporary measure and not a complete closure.

A third of the water is congressionally mandated to flow down the Atchafalaya.

I'm no expert but it seems that if we lack flow down here they are probably lacking flow just upriver.

I see what your saying, but there's no valve

it goes through the low sill structure at the ORCS

its an open structure that can't be closed iirc

Just needs more taxes to solve the problem.

Could it be done temporarily like the underwater sill?

upon further review the ORCS seeks to maintain a 70-30 split of the Mississippi flow at that point

70 down the miss Channel and 30 of the flow through the low sill and down the atchafalaya

if they send too much down the miss then u run the risk of ports not being able to be used around Morgan city/etc

I read this has happened numerous times in the past. One time it reached as far North as Kenner. Why is everyone freaking out this time? What did people do back in 1988 when this happened?

Do folks along the Atchafalaya River get potable water from that river?

Yes. Morgan City and surrounding areas pull water from the river and its tributaries. If they diverted the flow to the Mississippi we would have devastating saltwater intrusion in one of the only places in this state that is making land. Wouldn't be good.

Friend of mine posted this on Facebook. He said he took the picture this morning while passing a water reservoir in New Orleans.
