Faced with drought and saltwater intrusion, Louisiana farmers fear for survival of crawfish

quote:

This year, at least half of Louisiana has been in extreme drought, and southwestern Louisiana is the driest part of the state. The continuous streak of record-high temperatures and minimal rainfall has resulted in an impenetrable layer of clay and cracking burrows, robbing the crustaceans of the moisture nutrients they rely on during their dormancy and ultimately killing them.

“Not all of them die but enough of them die to where that first hatching doesn’t happen. Nobody knows, the signs are not good,” Frugé said.

He is hoping the extensive water pumping his farm has done over the summer for his rice crops will be enough to keep the subterranean crawfish burrows moist. It is too early to tell the extent of the damage the drought has caused, Frugé said. But he knows it will have a negative impact on the season.

I stumped my toe last night, hundreds of miles from the nearest crawfish pond, but still probably good for a 10-cents per pound increase next year.

They are going to frick up and make crawfish farming profitable. Then they will want crawfish from MS and Texas banned.

Time to cull the herd and take out the invasive species.. or let them thrive so we can feast.

Doesn't matter how much these articles get posted every year, it's all still about supply and demand.

Supply has been pretty good the last few years and crawfish prices have been fine.

Of course if you try to buy them and late December the price will be stupid high, but common sense should tell you that.

Most guys crawfish because that's the only way they are profitable on a rice farm.

You idiots that bitch about crawfish farmers should turn your attention to sugarcane guys. Crawfish guys don't get shite from the government, all while sugar is one of the most heavily subsidized crops there is. So yeah, you're going to see articles about shitty weather conditions impacting their livelihood, which just so happens to be a major part of our culture.

Then don't farm rice.

Do people farm rice to sell the rice or farm rice to get the crawfish?

Plant the rice for the crawfish. Crawfish have to have a food source hence the rice. It’s not as easy as not farming rice you gotta have it. Educate yourself before you make statements like that

They do both. They farm rice during rice season, then harvest. After harvest they flood the field and farm crawfish that eat the vegetation left and poop and fertilize the fields where rice is then planted and the cycle starts again.
