Check this thread on the travel board.
The live music is overrated, at least on 6th. When I lived there is was the same rotation of bands just playing in a different place each night.

Stellar BBQ is tasty.
Good breweries around (Lazarus & 512 were fun when I went).

Depends what kind of live music you're into. Plenty of good food as well.

Marginally less likely to be carjacked than Nola. Marginally more likely to step in homeless poop.

If you’re looking for a good burger, Bloody Mary and some heavy metal music, Casino El Camino is your place.

Get outside of town and go enjoy the good parts of Austin. If you want to make the drive, go out to Captain Pete's Boathouse. It used to be called the Gnarly Gar. It's a floating bar on Lake Travis, they usually have a decent cover band.
Go down to Ski Shores on Lake Austin for a burger and a beer. Great little spot on the water.
If you have to stay close to downtown, Hula Hut is also on the water. I haven't been there in a few years, but can't imagine it's changed any.
If you're wanting to chase some California soccer moms, go sit at any bar in the Domain. The more expensive, the better your chances.
Steiner Ranch Steak House is one of my favorites, also out by Lake Travis.
If you want, go by The Oasis. It's crowded, the food is overpriced and terrible, but you can't beat the view. If I go, I go to the bar because it's impossible to screw up a crown and coke and just get an appetizer.
They usually have some pretty solid cover bands upstairs on the weekends too.
Another spot with a great view is Mt. Bonnell. Not far from downtown and overlooks Lake Austin.
Maybe I'm just old now, but for me the best of what Austin has to offer is west of downtown. I avoid downtown to the best of my abilities, it's a shell of what it was 20 years ago.

If you have time, drive out to Bastrop for Buc-Ees.
Otherwise, hit up a Whataburger or Taco Cabana.

I would suggest he survey the local "unhomed" and ask if they'd stop shitting in public places if we 1) gave them ipads, 2) gave them porta potties, 3)acknowledged their truths.
I hate Austin more for pussy drivers. Doing 15 in a 35, die in a fire.

Not nearly as cool as it was 10+ years ago but still has its pluses. If you’re I to dive/neighborhood bars I recommend:
G and S Lounge
Ego’s
Lala’s
Barfly’s
Nickel City
Valhalla
Skinny’s Off Track
For Tacos the best are Taco Mex and Las Trancas
For BBQ Franklins is very good but I prefer La Barbeque

Best burgers I've ever had were in Austin
Golden Tiger and Not a Dam Chance are Michelin star worthy burger spots around bars (Not a Dam's chef is actually a Michelin star sushi/pasta chef)
Rainey st is good for barhopping and Barton Springs is a good way to spend a couple of hours and get some sun. Gf and I went kayak around the springs then went ate so-cones at the huge park across the street.
The Moody Center stays having concerts, and Rogan and his crew opened up a few comedy clubs around 6th street which have pretty big names appear nightly
S Congress was also good for a couple of hours worth of time wasting. Lots of high dollar hipsters in that area tho, but some cool shops in the area.
