A Florida man and his teenage stepson died after hiking in extreme heat at Big Bend National Park in Texas, officials said Saturday.

With temperatures at 119 degrees Fahrenheit, the 14-year-old boy fell ill along the Marufo Vega Trail and passed out on Friday around 6 p.m., according to the National Park Service. The 31-year-old stepdad began to hike back to their vehicle to find help. His other stepson, 21, tried to carry the teen back to the trailhead.

Park Rangers and agents from the U.S. Border Patrol arrived around 7:30 p.m. and found the teen had died along the trail, officials said.

Officials started a search for the father and found his vehicle had crashed over the embankment at the Boquillas Overlook. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gosh dang that's sad.

I hiked a bit in Big Bend a few years ago. It was so arid that my sweat would dry almost instantly. I'm used to being soaked in Louisiana humidity so I didn't realize how much water I was losing.

Saw this last night. Hiking an exposed desert trail during the summer is insane. Doing so as an amateur is borderline suicidal. It's obviously tragic, but a tragedy that is easily avoided. I don't understand why people have so little respect for the extremes of our planet.

ETA: Fixed trial/trail typo

Big Bend is an Oct-April venue. Same for the Guadalupes.

Big Bend is a winter national park for me.

I did McKittrick Canyon in Guadalupe last year in September, a little over 9 miles in about 90-95 degrees. I was prepared for it and it was fine. But, if you aren't prepared, that heat will get you.

I give him credit for the effort, but no way would I hike one desert canyons in mid summer. I believe its a well known ideal.

This story has a ton to dissect.

31 year old with a 21 year old and 14 year old stepsons.

Needs pics of the mom.

Most people vastly underestimate the amount of water they will need to carry, even for a hike like you described, much less the hellscape in the OP.

I've been to the park extensively, and completely agree with this statement.

There have been quite a few bad moves by father's taking their sons to meet their death lately.

RIP to the deceased.

I carried over a gallon of water plus salty foods.

In 119 degrees with no shade, I doubt that would have even made a difference.

Even in my big hiking days I wouldn't have tried this. I did some mountain hiking in New Mexico and would carry multiple 3L bags of water (usually 3), and even then my hard stop was burning through the first one.

There's a great book called "Death in Big Bend" that documents many of the deaths in the park. Some really fascinating rescues.

It's not just heat that gets you either, although that is the majority. One guy was caught in a blizzard.

Another struck by lightning. One very disturbing child death along the Old River Road that's unsolved.

The weirdest was a dude who paid another guy to kill him in the desert. Crazy arse story.

But, yes, hiking exposed in those elements is asking for it.

I mostly go in cooler temps. Went once around Labor Day and did a short hike into the Canyon which has some shade.

I had to take frequent breaks and felt light headed at times and I had plenty of water with me.

When I got back to my car, which was in the shade the temp inside was 115. Never again.

yeah hiking big bend is tough with the extremes. We did a south rim loop overnighter in early October and the two of us each carried three 2.5L bladders. It was barely enough and on top of that we froze our asses off in the tent that night

I went in February and it was great. Can’t imagine why anyone would want to go in June.

Nah, effects of long covid, obviously. I hear a symptom is chronic dehydration.
