Fertility rates dip, people are having babies later

Birth rates have declined in most states across the US in recent years, while women are having babies at an older age, according to new data released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Despite the short-term plunge — and comeback — during the early years of the Covid-19 pandemic, the rates have been consistently trending down.
Nearly 3.7 million babies were born in 2022, according to the CDC analysis of birth certificates. The overall fertility rate was 56.1 births per 1,000 women ages 15-44, holding relatively steady from the rate of 56.3 in 2021. After a sharp drop in 2020, birth rates rose in 2021 — the first increase since 2014 — but the numbers still reflect a decline that began before the pandemic.

The overall decline in births is explained in part by the increasing age of first-time mothers, according to Carolina Aragão, a research associate at Pew Research Center.
“Women have been delaying motherhood,” Aragão said. When people have their first child later, they tend to have fewer children overall, Levine explained.
Birth rates among women in their late 30s and early 40s rose in the last decade, and the birth rate among women over 45 also exceeded one birth per 1,000 population for the first time in more than a decade.
Meanwhile, the teen birth rate dropped to a record low in 2022. There were 13.5 births for every 1,000 teens ages 15 to 19, down from 13.9 in 2021, according to the new CDC data.

Modern society isn't kind to family planning and the constant push for women in careers in being done for a reason (Bill&Melinda Gates climate change).

Judging by how lazy young people are these days, I am OK with them not raising kids

To each their own, but I couldn’t imagine having a kid that late.

People who have jobs and wait until they can afford to have kids are exactly the types that need to have more kids.
We are encouraging the wrong people to reproduce. We need paid family leave at the very least. Intelligent, hard working couples with careers need to be more comfortable having children earlier and more often.

It's VR porn. You really don't need a woman anymore.

This.
And people are more narcissistic these days so if they are going to cut back it won’t be on themselves. They will just not have kids. Too expensive.

Kind of hard not to given the economics of having a kid these days.

Even if we wanted another kid we don't have the house to do so without leaving the city. Currently stuck in our starter home due to an insanely low mortgage rate.

Those Depression Era families were so small because of the economics.
Nature of an evolving society, eventually the birth rate drops.

Had kids starting fairly young by todays standards. There’s times we talk about having a third but life is pretty comfortable with two right now - three would be hectic and we’re almost done with daycare. I guess if it happens it happens.

I gave my FIL 2 good mules and a hog in exchange for his 15 year old daughters hand. We are on our 14th child now

This.
Pay $2700 a month just for daycare for two kids in round rock. On top of everything else they need it really adds up quickly
