He's going to cost Bama the game (that and Sark having one foot out the door), the only question is how badly.

Does Pete make it easier or harder on Saban. Only Saban knows.

Because some Alabama fans still have this fantasy that a 2011 defense should be on the field. You can be dissatisfied with the LB play (Golding coaches the ILBs) and the seemingly continued break downs on the same type of plays, but no one else in the country seems to be having any success stopping elite offenses. A lot is stacked against modern defenses.

This is one of the more logical takes I've seen on here in a while.

I think most people need to personally redefine what a great defense is. Gone are the days of holding opponents to 9 points a game. Rules and RPO offenses put tremendous pressure on even good defenses. That rule change allowing linemen to block 3 yards downfield, knowing they are not calling it even 5 yards most of the time, was a game changer for RPOs. The Bama D was only challenged against ole miss and fl. Outside of being really bad on 3rd downs, it's been pretty stellar the rest of the time.

I hate to agree with a Bammer, but well I agree entirely...”modern defenses” it looks are there to bend but not break, too many elite athletes flying all over the field on the offensive side of the ball for days of old 9-6 games...GDT’s

Pretty much this.

I’ve given up hope on any semblance of old LSU defensive units. The offenses are just too damn good. The pendulum may swing back, but I think high scoring is here to stay.

Can't wait to see Bama post Saban. They will run every coach off after 1 year losing 1-2 games and a defense that doesn't resemble 2011 for them. Nobody plays great defense in modern NCAA anymore. Good luck finding a nasty true lockdown defense that can keep all elite offenses scoring low.

That said, I don't think Golding is that great. But I will say he's young and probably at some point will be a much better coach looking back a few years. At some point I think he's going to make a round trip to LSU due to him being from Hammond.

What u are seeing is a modern day version of the wishbone (still the best offense ever created). The qb makes a read and decides to hand the ball off or pass (which used to be a pitch in the bone days)
Option football, ran with great athletes is impossible to stop. Bama, Oklahoma and Texas were averaging 400 yards on the GROUND.....in the 70's. They were also averaging 40 points a game. The rpo has taken the option and incorporated passing. It's why u see a team get 620 yards of offense and lose by 3 tds. All the rpo is is a modified wishbone.

This very closely mirrors my feelings about Todd Grantham at Florida, although I still lean towards wishing he'd move on.

The only thing I can ask of a defense is that they sack opposing QBs, force turnovers, and play with clear purpose.

Its hard to keep even average teams under 400 yards and 20 points, no matter how good your defense is. Especially when you run an elite offense that scores in 4 plays under 2:30, that means you're easily running 10-12 drives per game on defense with very little rest. Then, even Vandy can spread you 5 wide and move the ball a little if their QB isn't complete dogshit.

But shouldn't saban fix that?

If saban keeps seeing breakdowns on the same play he would've fixed it by now if he could've

i think that game is going to be closer than what most think it will be... Ohio states defensive line is pretty good. and I could very well see them coming in with a chip on their shoulder.

the only outlier to me is how bad the Ohio state QB is hurt...
