They went 7-5 this year, which is Bower's 14th straight winning season and received an invitation to the Papajohns.com Bowl Saturday...

This will be something like his 10th bowl game in the last 11 seasons.....

Must be a delusional Mississippi thing. Identical to the Cutcliff firing at Ole Miss. What, exactly, are their expectations?

Unless some major scandal is about to break involving Bower, this may be the worse firing ever

Makes you wonder with Boise's run last year, and Hawaii's run this year if the expectations at mid-major level are getting higher as well.

one thing is certain, Bower's rep is he can be a major prick, so maybe they got tired of him

Got skull fricked by Rice at home...lost to Memphis at home. They had a very winnable schedule this year and went 7-5.

I'm sure the boosters see programs like South Florida ranked as high as 2 and want that.

If the boosters think that is happening at Southern Miss, then they are in for a very rude awakening

Oh no doubt, but that is the only thing that I can come up with for his firing.

I am a Southern Miss graduate and I am pretty shocked by this.

Word on the street is that he was fired. He was forced to resign.

Honestly, I have been frustrated with the program's mediocrity the past few years, but Bower is not the only problem.

I also don't know who they think they'll get that's better for the $200-400K salary they can offer.

I really am saddened that they would fire a coach who was loyal and has such strong ties to the community. He had other offers back in the late 90s, but he chose to stay put. Time will tell if this was a smart or stupid decision.

im from hattiesburg, and i cant explain this

they have winning seasons every year, and if they played the likes of Ole Miss or State they would beat them. Bower has even now put together some SOLID recruiting kids given he has to market a small program to kids who will be getting offers from two in-state SEC schools.

My mom called me and said that the AD Giannini had Bower in today for their weekly Monday morning meeting and said that he "wanted his resignation or he was fired"

They seemed to want more from that program than winning seasons. True, they never did run the table and make noise, such as TCU had done, but they were still a legitimate CUSA team every year.

They've looked very mediocre the last few years and have not performed up to expectations. However, I think Bower has done more with less than anyone in college football over the years and he deserved a better fate. As stated above, I don't know who USM thinks they can hire that's better than Bower for the money they can pay. Maybe things had gotten a little complacent there, but they had a good coach who wanted to be there. That's pretty uncommon these days.

Since Nix left the program has gone down. Players aren't going to the NFL like they used to, attendance down. I think he needed to go last year. The program is definitely in decline.

Most coaches that replace curley hallman end up getting fired.

JB would be a great DC here.....
